Should dumping beer on visiting player who leaps into the home-field stands be tolerated?

Fair points for sure. But is the player taunting the home fans by deliberately jumping into the opposing stands?

The player doesn't have to do that. I suspect that many players would say they don't do that - it's disrespectful to come into an opposing stadium and jump all into the fans.

I saw it as they found a fan in the front row and decided to celebrate with them. I could see how people would get upset, but they weren't cussing the fans or throwing things at them. Definitely see your point in the players knowing they will get retaliation so why push it.

I think it's easier on everyone to just tell opposing teams they aren't allowed to do it.

Throwing things on to the field will get you kicked out, it should apply to throwing things at players as well.

If Cam Newton jumps into our stands, does that Superman pose & someone's flame thrower goes off---Cam needs to be fined & suspended
If Kamara jumps into the stands in LA & someone spills their Mai Tai--escort/drag all Rams fans out of that section & give their seats to our fans
I think this works for everyone

So on Sunday, Titans CB Logan Ryan returned an INT to the end-zone at Cleveland - and he kept running and leapt into the first row of fans. One of them threw his beer into Logan Ryan's face. Ryan didn't like it and has complained about it.

First of all, what's hilarious about that is that the Browns contacted a Cleveland man to inform him that he was banned from the stadium . . . when, in fact, the man hadn't been to a Browns game since 2010! :covri: https://www.clevescene.com/scene-an...ng-beer-on-titans-player-ban-him-from-stadium

But a better question, I think, is whether the Browns should have done anything at all. Clearly you can't have fans throwing things at players - generally speaking. But if an opposing player does a Lambeau Leap into the lap of a fan at his own home stadium, hasn't the player at least taken on some risk that he's gonna get a beer in his face?? It's not going to injure the player - it's just beer.

I think I'm with the fan on this one. Get your INT. Celebrate with your fans. Don't come jumping up here in our house.

I wish that video started earlier- is there a reason why the player chose that spot to jump?

(I notice a TN fan to the right who comes to give the player a pat on the helmet.)

Also - why are the other TN players jumping up into the stands.

I think that fan was "within his rights" to shower that FOURTH player who jumped right at him!

[It seems to me when the video starts there are 2 players who have jumped right where a woman is - and the guy to the left starts to shower them. Then when the 4th player shows up, he takes a swipe at the blue beer bottle. At which point the fan then showers him a bit.

As I said, I wish that video started earlier to see what transpired initially.]

To be assault, he has to intend to cause harm or reasonable fear of harm. It's hard to say that Logan could reasonably fear being harmed by beer.

A battery is the mere intentional contact - it doesn't have the intent requirement.

Either way, both are crimes, as a technical matter.
Getting someone used Beer in your eyes is physical harms. Your eyes burning is physical harm. Getting containmented beer in your mouth which could have numerous transmissionable diseases. It's maciously intent. It's clear cut assault. If you got some beer in your mouth and woke up with cold sours. If you wanna press charges... You would do so as assault & battery.

Assault & Battery in that case would probably be a misdemeanor offense. You would have to put someone in the hospital to get felony assault. It's not one size fits all.

Nice try anyway, Chuck. :tiphat:

I vote "hate crime" for opposition jumpers.

Honestly, if I were a player, I’d love it.

Sure I’m an athlete, but a big part of my job is to entertain. If I’m under your skin THAT much, then I must be a good heel.

I think you’re over-selling it quite a bit. Do you honestly believe the fan intended to harm the player? Even moreso, with malice? Those words have actual legal definitions and I don’t think they’re warranted.

Again, it’s clearly a low grade battery - beyond that it’s reaching IMO.

Eventually, a player will get hurt doing this and the league will start fining.

There might be a deranged psycho in that fan group you're jumping into, you never know...

The only one who got beer in his face is the only one who jumped into the stands directly in front of a Browns fan. (Why anyone but the dude who picked the ball off is jumping into the stands in the first place is beyond me.) It's not like the Browns fan went over to the guy who scored and poured beer on him for celebrating with his own team's fans. If that were me, I'd kinda take it as a taunt that you're going to basically jump in my lap, while wearing my team's jersey, in a losing effort, and expect me to celebrate with you.

I think everyone is entitled to their space. If I purchase a ticket, and seat 101 is my seat for that game, and a warrior in armor runs and jumps into my space, invading my territory, I am entitled to a self defense, even if beer is my only weapon :)

Seriously, the player was being provocative, and had to expect a reaction. What action do we deem acceptable? That is subjective. What action is legal, well, that could be subjective with a good lawyer. Two rights don't make a wrong, but you can't penalize the fan in-proportionately to the player. Opposing players have no business jumping into the adversaries fans in an effort to goad or rub it in - even our players.

I think it is funny, both what the player and the fan did, but I don't agree with banning a fan for life (albeit the wrong fan). This is also should be treated differently than if a player, in the course of making a play, finds himself in the fans lap (though in terms of NFL, I don't think I've ever seen that happen in the course of a play, in seating where such a wall / barrier separates fans from players along with liberal real estate between field and seating... it's not like NBA or MLB).

And there exists a gulf of difference between that and throwing urine on the opposition because you are a sore loser (UT fans).
