I don't usually watch the news, but as of today per that website, they are apparently still looking for him. No telling what might have happened. I disagree about the French Quarter being a "very dangerous place" especially on Mardi Gras day. Obviously it's hectic and chaotic, but dangerous? I don't know. Hopefully they will find him soon.
