Aside from watching 300-pound men wobble through the 40-yard dash, the element of surprise and thrill is generally absent from the NFL Scouting Combine, but every once in a while a good story is unearthed.
Last year in Indianapolis, top wide receiver prospect Calvin Johnson, a projected top-three pick out of Georgia Tech, announced that he wouldn't run the 40-yard-dash.
He couldn't enhance his draft position any further, so Johnson said he'd wait until his March 15 Pro Day workout to run the 40. He didn't even bring track sneakers.
