Not cops but a 'patrol group'. Police involved later though
======================

A Brooklyn man who was savagely beaten by members of a Hasidic safety patrol in 2013 has been awarded $4.5 million in the case.

The victim, Taj Patterson, who is Black and gay, was just 22 years old when he was walking home from a friend’s birthday celebration around 4:30 a.m. near Flushing Avenue on December 1st, 2013.

Unprovoked, about ten Hasidic safety patrol members began beating him, calling him the “f-word” during their assault. Apparently, the members received a call earlier about a Black person vandalizing vehicles in Williamsburg. Patterson believes the group targeted the first Black person they saw.

Despite four witnesses, the NYPD’s 90th Precinct labeled the attack a misdemeanor with only one aggressor before closing the case. However, Peterson and his mother, Zahra, refused to accept this outcome, and shortly after, the case was reopened and classified as a hate crime.

At least one 90th Precinct was reprimanded for closing the case without proper investigation.

Eventually, five men were arrested on assault charges, though charges against two were dropped. The other two pleaded guilty to misdemeanor unlawful imprisonment in 2016, and a fifth man, Mayer Herskovic, was convicted of gang assault in 2017. He successfully appealed his conviction in 2018.

Since then, the fight for justice has been a slow process that often favored the attackers.............

The report stated that Weber told detectives he had removed the magazine from the AR-15 and had checked it for ammunition before bringing it to the living room, adding that he had "believed the firearm to be empty."
So it was that notorious "magical" round that was chambered.

Taylor — a manager at Thorntons — said Neff came into the gas station where she worked often as officers received free coffee and drinks, and the plastic wrap was just part of the harassment.

"He wanted to give me a hug, so we side-hugged, and then he kissed me on my cheek," Taylor said. "At that point, I told people I am uncomfortable around him and this is not something I am wanting to pursue."

The next day, Neff returned to the gas station, and police reports say he stayed more than two hours while on duty and "followed" Taylor around the store. Taylor said Neff admitted to having romantic feelings for her, she told him that she was in a relationship and only wanted to be friends. That same day, security footage in the back storage area of the gas station captured two separate incidents where Neff groped Taylor. Prosecutors said he claimed to be faking a search.
All that and dude was not fired from his job.
It was another officer who frequented the store and talked Taylor about the incident who turned Neff in to LMPD superiors. The misdemeanor charges he confessed to in a plea deal came with probation and no time behind bars.

Neff quit LMPD at the time of his guilty plea.

"I don't think he should have had a right to resign," Taylor said. "I think he should have been fired. He got a slap on the wrist."

A newly-obtained autopsy report has concluded that a 43-year old Florida man’s death after being violently restrained by jailers was a homicide by strangulation.

On 17 January, 2021, Kevin Desir became unresponsive after a struggle with six deputies at the North Broward Bureau facility, a jail operated by the Broward county sheriff’s office (BSO) in south Florida.

The jail specifically detains arrestees who have mental and physical disabilities, as well as those with mental health problems.

During the incident, Desir was handcuffed, punched repeatedly, tasered, and pepper sprayed by officers, and lost consciousness after the deputies attempted to strap him into a restraint chair…….

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A white former police officer went on trial Monday for fatally shooting a Black woman through a rear window of her Texas home in a case that has faced years of delays.

Fort Worth officer Aaron Dean quit and was charged with murder two days after killing 28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson while responding to a call about an open front door in October 2019. Jefferson had been playing video games with her then-8-year-old nephew, who later told authorities his aunt pulled out a gun after hearing suspicious noises behind the house. Body-camera footage showed Dean didn't identify himself as police.

At the time, the case was unusual for the relative speed with which, amid public outrage, the Fort Worth Police Department released the video and arrested Dean. Since then, his case has been repeatedly postponed amid lawyerly wrangling, the terminal illness of his lead attorney and the COVID-19 pandemic...............
