A former Mesa, Arizona, police officer who was acquitted two years ago in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man seen on video pleading "please do not shoot me" was temporarily rehired by his department last year so he could apply for an accidental disability pension.
Philip Mitchell Brailsford, 28, is now retired from the force with a tax-free pension worth $31,000 a year for life — and his attorney confirmed Friday that the settlement was a result of him suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder due to the shooting involving Daniel Shaver of Texas.

Banana? I wouldn't have thought about the racist connotation because I've never used it or seen it used in that context, but I can see why someone would. I wouldn't have picked that codeword tho.Could be racist, could be oblivious mistake

A codeword used by police to grant family access to their dying teenage relative in hospital was racist, his mother has alleged.
19-year-old Sheldon Lewcock was hit by a van in Tilehurst, Reading in August 2022.
Police gave his mother, Angela Lewcock, the codeword “banana” to use when visiting her son, who was mixed-race, in hospital. Thames Valley Police’s professional standards department is now investigating the use of this word…….

In a lot of Euro soccer, fans have been known to throw bananas at the opposing team’s black playersBanana? I wouldn't have thought about the racist connotation because I've never used it or seen it used in that context, but I can see why someone would. I wouldn't have picked that codeword tho.
Wasn't aware of that. I don't really follow soccer outside of the USMNT. Definitely one of those "I don't understand people" things. Thanks for the heads up.In a lot of Euro soccer, fans have been known to throw bananas at the opposing team’s black players
It doesn’t happen, a lot, but it certainly happens
yeah it sucks - and it's one of the main reasons teams still kneel at beginning of games (not just bananas, but pervasive racism)Wasn't aware of that. I don't really follow soccer outside of the USMNT. Definitely one of those "I don't understand people" things. Thanks for the heads up.
Yeah, I do remember seeing some reports about the kneeling, although I had assumed it was more related to broader social justice issues. Makes sense that it's intended to address racism issues. Is it more related to racism directed at the teams, or more at broader racism issues in those countries? Maybe both?yeah it sucks - and it's one of the main reasons teams still kneel at beginning of games (not just bananas, but pervasive racism)
Italy seems to be one of the worst offenders - or at least they get the banner headlines when there's an 'incident'
but i have to say for as **** an organization as UEFA is, they do seem to put some teeth in their mostly PR anti-racism campaigns. and broadcasters usually at least pay lip-service to addressing the issues
the Euros on the board can probably shed more light - but i'd say bothYeah, I do remember seeing some reports about the kneeling, although I had assumed it was more related to broader social justice issues. It also means they don't want to see Memphis burn, which, depending on how bad this is, may be on the table anyway. So I’ve seen online regarding the Memphis cops body cam footage that will be released tomorrow that either the mayor and/or police chief said to the effect “it’s important to remain calm, they’ve all been fired and charged with murder, etc.”
Which means this video is going to be absolutely brutal and even worse than I thought
