Practice squad (1 Viewer)

It looks like Calhoun was a UDFA signed and cut by Chicago this year and Lutz was a UDFA signed and cut by the Ravens this year.

Anybody have any information on them?

BTW, I find it interesting that we picked up a kicker for the practice squad.
Calhoun seems to be a low-upside player with limited athletic ability and limited size, which limits his ability in run support. However, he does have good character, intelligence, understanding of the game, and makes plays. It is believed that he is exclusively a zone corner. Given all this, he seems like an odd fit here.

Lutz is your typical big-legged kicker who is working on accuracy. Maybe we feel we can fix him. It just seems strange to carry a zone corner and a kicker when we don't even have a tenth offensive lineman to round out our second unit in practice.

According to Nick Underhill the last two spots on the PS have been filled by CB Taveze Calhoun and K Wil Lutz. WR Jordan Williams-Lambert is NOT one of them.

Then the Saints rounded out the practice squad by bringing back wide receiver Jordan Williams-Lambert and adding cornerback Taveze Calhoun, and former Georgia State kicker Wil Lutz posted on his Instagram that he signed with the New Orleans practice squad after a Monday tryout. Lutz spent training camp with the Baltimore Ravens.

Wil Lutz was a bit of a Thomas Morestead clone at Georgia State. He was a kicker and punter for much of his career. He has a great stroke, and plenty of power. I'd trust the Ravens with most special teams "finds" as Harbaugh was a special teams coordinator prior to getting the head slot.

Dude looks the part.

Really, a concentration on kicking coupled with pro level coaching (cue the OMG LULZ McMahon is stoopid crowd) could yeild a decent player going forward.

At worst, there's another leg in camp to keep Morestead from getting overworked. His numbers were down last year, and I can only imagine punting and kickoffs wore him down somewhat. I mean, he's not getting any younger.

They must see some potential in him as it is a bit odd to carry a kicker on the PS. We did not bring in a punter to ease Morstead's work in training camp when he got more work. During the season, the workload is not that unbearable for a punter during the week, so I do not think that is the focus.

Morestead didn't do any kickoffs this year. Kicking off was what was causing him problems with his quads. Giving the kickoff duties to the place kickers will extend his career. He looked better punting this preseason than he has in a while.

I get the feeling that they are going to have Murphy fielding an exorbitant amount of punts and kickoffs each week. Probably better to have a third leg to do so with. But I'm just speculating.
