Prayers to Obama? (1 Viewer)

Fixed that for you. Why can't you recognize the nuts on your side of the aisle? I'll happily concede to you that we have ours.
I dont think you'll see me saying there aren't nuts or that these people arent wacky as hell. But I think its pretty clear that they're praying to God for Obama to hear their cries for healthcare, the poor etc. Not them actually praying to Obama as if he were their God.

Which is still nutty to me specifically because prayers to God(or Obama) have about the same success rate as praying to a milk carton or Joe Pesci. But thats just my cynicism getting the better of me.

So young impressionable children worshipping the sitting president is fine but a group of older people praying that Obama delivers them healthcare, equal rights, and help for the poor is the only one that is actually frightening in your mind?

How about both are silly, a little strange and both should make you raise an eyebrow?

Something tells me that despite it's oddness, neither video, on its own merit, is going to lead to some catastrophe for America or affect any one of our lives in any meaningful manner unless your out there looking for **** to rile you up.
They weren't worshiping him they were praying to god to bless him. I agree that it is strange, but the Obama worshiping is way over the line.

No they're both wacked out and nutty but you seem to want to rationalize the people on your side as a way to justify only having outrage at those on the left. You should probably go rent that movie because thats not the only occurrence that happens in the film and several families have shrines and pictures in which they pray to Bush every day.

Both were worshipping, one more directly than the other.

There are tons of nuts on the left. Heck, the left pretty much invented nuts. Why do you think that California for so long was labeled the breakfast cereal state for all the flakes and nuts? For every nutty right-leaning group you can probably find 3 nutty left-leaning groups.

This thread once again proves why most things never get accomplished in our government.
Let me guess, this video was sent by a friend or group who think Obama sucks or was posted somewhere showing how scary he is. So let's divide the masses a bit more and keep them looking off at the shiny objects that have diddly poo to do with anything.
So now that the socialist rant or the birther rant or the deather rant or the rant...rant is passed, let's move on to some other meaningless piece of work.

But having now viewed the video -- while it's weird and kind of creepy, it's not a prayer -- it's a speech that has call and response. Nobody was bowing their head or worshipping. The "deliver us" stuff is weird but nothing more than what people were saying about Jindal "delivering us" from Obama (or more locally, from Blanco), or many other people on both sides using that "deliver us" rhetoric as a means of saying that their candidate/leader would actually lead them to a better condition.

What made it weirder was that is seemed so... directed -- not spontaneous at all, and kind of flatly read.

Did you just do a rant rant? :ezbill:

People feed off appeals to emotion.

Just look at the EE board, topics on policy or intellectually complex topics tend to get few replies, while topics that will probably never make any impact on either the poster's life or the grander scheme of politics in general (this video, fringe groups or individuals making statements, a song in a public school) illicit 10 page threads with people going completely overboard damn near claiming its the sign of the apocalypse.

The common denominator? they are appeals to emotion.

I'm not claiming innocence cause you'll find my name in many of those threads but it seems most of us are hard-wired to internalize and act on triggers that play on our emotions over triggers that play on our intellect or common agreements.

Personally, I find praying to anything, be it god or Obama, "creepy".

Thanks, St. Widge. I know your beliefs are athiestic, and as a Christian, I was wondering what your take on this would be. I figured we'd both agree that praying to Obama or any mortal man would be "creepy", but I didn't want to assume that those who don't believe in a God would feel the same way. Thanks for reading my mind and responding! :)

To me, both are creepy. I'd say that the Obama one is creepier, at least to me, because they're praying TO him, unlike the first one with Bush. But again, switch the presidents around, and my feelings would be EXACTLY the same. It's not the fact that it's Obama, it's the fact that they're praying TO a mortal human that bugs me. But then again, there are whackjobs on both sides all over the place. On one hand, we need to be aware that this creepiness is going on, but on the other hand, it's being brought up by the right wing fanatics as "fear mongering", IMO. My take is that I'm filing it away in my mind, next to the other information, to remember that this stuff is going on, but I don't see a need to dramatically overreact to this.

And again, on one hand you might say "OMG, these situations are increasing; first we had the praise song and now this!!!". File it away and weigh it out...is it really increasing, or are we just hearing about it more due to the speed and availability of information in today's world? Perhaps a bit of both. Just be confident in your own beliefs, and don't let the whackos drag you with them to either side. Don't ignore and forget it, but don't act like it's the sign of the next apocalypse, as Bronco said above.

So I was supposed to pray FOR Obama and not TO him? Well, I certainly wish they made these things clear beforehand. I cannot express to you how embarrassed this makes me. Can I have a do-over?

Obama prayer and Jesus camp.....

rotten apples vs. rotten oranges

True, what they are doing at Jesus Camp is much more disturbing because they are brainwashing little kids. Where as, the praying to Obama is a bunch of adults who made their own decision to do that. Both are creepy, but Jesus Camp is much creepier.
