i bet we get a highly touted DE in retrospect of letting Will Smith go after his contract is up

We're trading up and getting Dorsey or Ellis. Watch and see.
I don't think they are ready to give up on JD and I think a lot of people are forgetting about the devlopment of UY.

Why not sign our franchise DE to a long term deal instead of drafting another in the first round every 5 or 6 years?

Either trade up for Sedrick Ellis/Glenn Dorsey, or draft DRC/McKelvin/Mike Jenkins.

I agree and have said this in other threads.....:9: If we get Briggs, it even further convinces me that Smith won't be a Saint past the '09 season. If we don't get Briggs, I think the chances of us drafting Rivers at 10 goes up a lot.

I think we go corner in round 1 without a doubt. We MUST address that position in round 1 in my opinion. I think round 2 you can go defensive end (Lawrence Jackson, Quentin Groves) or tight end (Fred Davis).

payton is bent on getting ellis.

i agree we put lito and young out there, with briggs, vilma, fujita. and in the draft do whatever we need to to get ellis or dorsey. then i can order my SB tickets.

It all depends on money and who's coming in. This years draft is heavy at the top with great pass rushing DE's, something we lack. If an effect of signing Briggs is letting Smith walk, with this years crop at DE, then so be it.

It really comes down to what you'd rather.

1. Smith and Rivers/Mayo

2. Briggs and Harvey/Gholston

....pretty close IMO. I would go with #2 because we would get an pass rushing specialist, something we really need.

i'd always rather keep a proven veteran in his prime than draft a top 10 in the same position. thats just redundant.

DRC or Talib. Unless the no brainer and Dorsey or Ellis falls. Worry about Smith next year.

It's really not. We either have t invest big money in Smith or Briggs. I'm not making a case for a drafted DE over Smith......I'm making a case for Briggs over Smith and drafting Smith's replacement.

Talib looked terrible, but I agree DRC or Ellis/Dorsey if one should fall (however unlikely that may be).

I still think a player like Balmer might slip to the 2nd.

If Vernon Gholston falls, I have no problem with it, but he won't fall past the Jets/Pats/Ravens/Bengals, all 3-4 teams who could use a pass rush. With that in mind I'd prefer Smith and Rivers/Mayo over Briggs and Harvey.
