Starting this Sunday, October 24th, people with 504 area codes will need to start using the area code for all calls, because the FCC is implementing a 988 shortcut dial for the suicide prevention hotline. So all area codes that have numbers with the 988 exchange will be affected (it's actually a bunch - details here: https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/ten-digit-dialing, and here is the full list: https://nationalnanpa.com/transitio...r_988/docs/NPAsRequiredtoTransitionto10DD.pdf). Obviously, most of us are on cell phones, but if you don't have the area code programmed in, you will need to edit your contacts.
It is also worth noting that since that change is not implemented yet (and the 988 shortcut won't be implemented Sunday), that the hotline is 800-273-8255. So if you need help, please reach out. More info also here: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/)
That is all. Please resume your regularly scheduled activities.
