Psychological effects of fortune for an NFL player (1 Viewer)

IMO, family wealth has very little to do with it. Much more important is having parents with a good head on their shoulders who have taught their children responsibility and a sense of value and who are there for their kids when they come into all that money. I heard Shaq tell a story once when he was considering leaving LSU for the pros. When his mama asked him to write a check (maybe she asked him to balance a checkbook, but it was something along those lines) and he couldn't do it, she told him "you're going back to school." Michael Jordan lived in a modest apartment in Chicago after he was drafted. Practically none of these guys, rich or poor, know how to manage that much money. They need direction and sound advice, and if they don't have it, they're bound to get in financial trouble.
