In a team sport, winning is everything. An 8-game win streak is nothing to complain about and who cares who scored the TDs when the final outcome is another notch in the win column. Winning matters but, don't be fooled, somebody is paying attention to the stats. Two statistics that are troubling: quaterback sacks and drop off in the production of AKamara.
Alvin Kamara has been a key producer in the Saints offense. In the last two games, Kamara has had 1 reception for -2 yards on 3 targets. The -2 yards came on a screen pass that was thrown behind Kamara and, after he adjusted to make the catch, the defense was there to make the tackle. In the Denver game, you could see the defense focus less on Kamara as a check-down target. Why does that matter? The Saints offense is most effective when it makes defense defend the whole field. Kamara is a key piece to the offense and he is being taken out of the game plan.
In the last two games, the quarterback sack has become an issue. In the first 9 games on 309 attempts, Brees and Winston were sacked a total of 12 times. In the last two games on 44 attempts, Taysome Hill has been sacked 7 times. Sacks can be drive killers and always put you behind the sticks for the next play. In games where the Saints can overwhelm opponents in all three phases, Taysom Hill's high sack rate may be the weakness teams look to exploit.
I typically post long posts that cover a lot of ground. But, in two games, these two facts are part of the reasons why New Orleans point spreads are shrinking as Taysom Hill puts more QB1 snaps on tape.
GO Saints!!
