We all know that we cannot release him due to he's currently on IR and obviously we want to bring him back but not at his current deal ($10M+ for the next upcoming season). So can we still extend him while he is on IR or we have to wait till he gets off?

Injury Settlement – In the NFL, an injured player cannot be released. Often a team and player will reach an Injury Settlement in lieu of putting, or keeping, the player on IR for the rest of the season. Once an Injury Settlement is reached, the player is released. This is done when the player has a chance to recover from injury and play again in that season. However, if the player is still under contract for future seasons and the team wants to retain the player’s rights for the future, the team will not agree to an Injury Settlement and instead decide to continue to carry the player on Injured Reserve (IR).

The CBA protects players who are injured performing football activities. Essentially if you are injured your salary is protected, but it is only protected to a point. Remember there are various extents of injuries that occur in the NFL. An ACL tear is devastating and will cause a player to miss the entire season. That is a major injury and the player will earn his entire Paragraph 5 salary for the year. But many of the injuries that land a player on IR are minor and are classified as such when placement on IR occurs. Those players, as soon as they are healthy enough to play football, are released from the team. Once released they may not re-sign with their former team for the duration of the season.

That protection is only for the season the player was injured in unless they have an injury guarantee written into the contract for the following season. Kwon doesn't have that clause as far as I know so the Saints can release him with an injury settlement that pays him somewhere between 2-3M and his medical expenses for the injury. Being that his injury is an Achillies tear and that is as bad if not worse than an ACL, I doubt he will be able to play before mid-season. He will have to agree to reduction of his salary or Loomis will take to settlement route and release him.

From this article that includes ESPN contract tracking, Kwon only had 2 million dollars in injury guarantees for both bonuses and salary.

New Orleans Saints LB Kwon Alexander to miss rest of season with torn Achilles, source says (espn.com)

That would mean of the $13.17 million cutting him would save $11.17 million. Because of this, Kwon does has an incentive to negotiate with saints and come back with a renegotiated contract, if he can. The Saints have done this to be fair with others in the past, like they did with Kiko Alonso last year after his ACL tear. He reduced his 8.7 million salary last offseason and made it where he would get paid on a per game basis depending on when he made it back during the season. I suspect the saints are trying to negotiate something similar with Kwon, as he is a good player if he could come back from that achilles.
