Ok all this may have been brought up before but I have been thinking can the the nfl regulate the free agent market? Meaning could they do what they do with rookies like a slotting format ? And would it make the nfl more competitive?

Your basically talking about eliminating true free agency. I don't believe that would ever happen. It would have to be part of the CBA negotiations and the NFLPA would NEVER agree to that.

still wish they could do something about the big cap hit your best player incurs. I think that if a player is on his third contract with the same team that the cap hit should be lessened somehow.

No not eliminating it but making free agency more competitive between all teams not just one or two

Like a Larry Bird rule in the NBA?

You'd be surprised. Throw enough money at them and see how quickly they change their tune. I'm not sure the NFL would pay for the privilege though. The NFLPA conceded quite a bit for a bigger share of the pie during the last CBA. Will be interesting to see how it unfolds during the next round of negotiations when the current CBA expires.

something like that. sucks that having a superstar on your team can actually hamstring the team up to a point. Not saying that Brees contract is hamstringing us at all. It is actually a very good contract cap wise. It is just if you pay for a superstar you have to cut cost elsewhere. I know they have a rule about vet minimum and a part is not counted against the cap or something like that.

It is competitive already because of the salary cap.
Guess what I'm getting at is that would it not help teams get outta cap hell would it not?

They got themselves into it. They can get themselves out. Also the owners would never agree to an NBA style "soft" cap system.

I really wish they would do something like make players eligible for a contract bonus that's only available to them if they stay with the team that drafted them. Like a player can get x% more and only offered from the draft team but wouldn't count against the salary cap so that it doesn't hurt the team cap wise. It might give players a reason to stick around but also allow players the chance to leave. . It can increase in percentage the length of years the players stays. I dunno, something to make guys wanna stick around and be committed.

I wouldn't mind if they had an amnesty rule, where you can amnesty one player every three years without incurring dead cap space. It would give teams some cap relief and not be hamstrung with bad/regretful contracts like Jairus Byrd or Junior Gallette.

And that would give the team the opportunity to voluntarily put more money into the NFLPAs pocket if they so choose. Seems like a win-win for both sides.

The amnesty exception is one rule from the NBA that I actually do like.

Yes they did but would it prevent teams from getting to that point again?

Doesn't matter. The owners simply won't agree to a soft cap system. Except for the Veteran minimum benefit rule that only affects about 800k per year per team, every penny paid to a player counts against the cap at some point.

Even player benefit costs (401k matches, family insurance, etc.) are part of the overall cap calculation every year.

I think the way the cap is right now is fair. A team will only get in cap hell if they don't manage well the cap and it's their responsibility to get out of it.

That said, I think your idea of an amnesty rule is great because sometimes it's not even their fault, like in Gallete's case, and the team have to pay that dead money for years.

Players would never (ever) accept it.

The only fix I would like to see to fix free agency is to stop giving (mystery) draft picks to whoever loses a free agent, via some hidden non-transparent formula (that often seems to favor the Patriots).
