Question for Shreveport/N. La fans (1 Viewer)

Boy...I've mentioned this Shreveport issue several times since I lived there the past 6 years and just moved to Slidell in August. I once brought up that Cowboys store in Pierre Bossier mall...whats funy is some Saints players went to that mall to sign autographs and they showed them on the news and I believe Laroi Glover made a comment about how they were signing autographs so close to a Cowboys store....

The fans up there are just like somebody else said...the epitome of "fair weather fans"...

Disgusting evidence: A HUGE number of Boston Red Sox fans (hats/shirts/etc.) after 2004. Tons of Miami Heat fans after they won the championship this year...and also...I saw quite a bit sudden Detroit Tigers fans...

And of course there are the Cowboys fans.

I love living down here...I'm home now I'll never go back except in May when I have to for the commencement ceremony to get my PhD degree.

I believe you're thinking of Charles Grant. I'm pretty sure that store has only been around for three years and Glover has been gone for five. But that store isn't there to be a profitable business. It's there to get people like us in an uproar. I guarantee they don't make any money off of it. I'd say 9 times out of 10 when I walk by the only person in there is the employee...and the few times i've seen people in there threre's no more than 1-3 people inside. There's no way they make any money off of that. The Saints could've easily put a store there long before. The Cowboys put that store there because the Saints won't.

>>You gotta understand the history between New Orleans/the rest of Louisiana and North Louisiana/South Louisiana, historically speaking they've been very different and have never really gotten along.....

As a New Orleans transplant living in Monroe for 4 + years, I've got to agree with hardhead233, and can't quite figure out the animous directed at S. La. They don't mind the crawfish and the customs (one cheesy Mardi Gras parade here), but these Bible Belt folks seem leery when they find out you're from below Baton Rouge.
That being said, I've learned to love the place (and a certain West Monroe girl) and Cowboys stickers on 4-wd trucks on I-20 aren't as frequent here as points west. However, there is a crew of diehard Saints fans at Enoch's Irish Pub, thank God!

What you gotta understand is that since its history especially dating from the early 1900's all the way back New Orleans was THE city of the South and of course Louisiana. It had all the prestige/power/influence and its was the richest and obviously got the most attention, also the fact that like you said most people in the north are protestant/bible country and whereas in the South and New Orleans area had a lot of eastern european and catholics. That's two VERY distinct culture influences. Also many north Louisianian's look at south as corrupt and deviant...Now that doesn't mean that all are like this because there are good and bad in every place. For instance I live in Acadiana and I definitely see an animosity towards New Orleans, but at the same time i've met people that have no problem and love it and have been extremely kind to me in my time of need, the ones that I see negative are mostly the older generations and when I see negative its nothing cruel, its mainly just attitude and comments and certains ways that people have...Much of it stems also from a basic city/country attitude IMO.....Even myself I'm from Chalmette and I can tell you that just in those areas of Jefferson/Kenner/West Bank/Slidell/Covington there is a very clanish type attitude about where you're from......Some people that might not be from the area wouldn't understand but it's there...

You right...I originally typed Grant but thought it was Glover for a sec...I stand corrected.

Are you sure you're not exaggerating just a little? I'm not calling you a liar but I really find that hard to believe. What part of North Louisiana were you in?

I was in the Shreveport area...driving through on the interstate...and no...I'am not exaggerating even a little.

I'm sure you'd get some of that. You were maybe 20mins from the Texas border.

Shreveport here, most people that I know are Saints fans. The Cowboy fan demographic here seems to be mostly rednecks and older folks, but they are definitely here. They didn't have much to say Monday. I went to the Bossier mall Monday ( I hate going to any mall, but alas). Passed by the Cowboys store, it was empty:p

Maybe, but what area of N.La exactly is he talking about? When you say N. Louisiana that could mean anything north of I-10 to some people. If it's Shreveport/Bossier he's talking about then maybe. I grew up in 318 so I'm pretty familiar with the mindset. Shreveport is completely different in many ways than say, Alexandria, Natchitoches or Ruston when it comes to it's NFL fans.

That crapola would never fly here in Monroe. I think 100% are SAINTS fans through and through(I would hope anyway since we get 100% of all their games)

Hardhead, again agree on several points.
Working in the media here, I had a unique perspective on this subject after Katrina. Monroe and the surrounding area opened the doors wide to help everyone in their time of need, and it truly seemed that we were one united state at that time. It was heartbreaking to walk through a packed Monroe Civic Center and hear the nuanced accents of folks from 'Da Parish, Mid City and the East, to name a few.
That didn't last long, however. Soon after, most local politicians had to deal with rampant, unfounded crime rumors and one state senator from Oak Grove even harped: "who would have thought that one day the Monroe area would be bigger than New Orleans."
It was very telling.
Hope the best for you in St. Martinville.

I live in Shreveport and have been a diehard Saints fan my whole life (am also catholic) and I can't stand this cowboy crap, what is it going to take to get a black and gold shop up here?

Okay, I have to say that I grew up in the Monroe area and really didn't know anyone from South LA my whole life. My family traveled to N.O. twice a year because my dad loves the city as I have grown to as well. I can say, I always understood that North LA and South LA were 2 different worlds but I never had any animosity towards anyone from that area. In Feb. of this year, my sister married a Houma native and she and her husband now live there. I have grown very fond of my brother-in-law and his family. As a matter of fact, I couldn't imagine not having him and his family as a part of mine. I have experienced things with those people that I've never experienced in my life. Keep in mind I've known them less than 1 year. If my brother-in-laws family is any indicator (which I'm sure it is) of how people are in South LA, those are the coolest, most genuine, laid back people on this planet and I love them all. I guess what I'm trying to say is, with North LA and South LA rarely interacting, we don't know much about the people from the opposite end of the state. I know my brother-in-law and his family have make so many North LA jokes (which I find very funny) but I didn't know they had kinda the same feeling about us. This just goes to show you that we should all spend a little more time getting to know each other. Maybe we're different is several ways but deep down we're all good ole' Louisiana people with the same values and outlooks. JMO!

I am originally from Monroe, LA and I grew up a diehard Saints fan. Being from North Louisiana, I know how many annoying Cowboy fans there are (esp. in Shreveport, that's why I have so much respect for Shreveport Saints fans) I'm dyng to know how the Cowgirl fans in North LA responded to the loss this past weekend. It's so unfortunate that I was not there to sulk in their misery!!!!!

My son, a high school senior in Shreveport, won a bet with a (male) friend , who wore a dress to school Monday. When my son went to history class, he found himself locked out. The teacher is a Cowboys fan, who presumably did not want to hear the gloating. This from the highest ranked (academically) high school in North La.

Just out of curiosity, what school does your son attend?

Old Shreveport Times reporter here.

Monroe was always Saints territory because former Louisiana Governor James A. Noe (KNOE-TV, radio) was on the Saints bandwagon from the get-go.

Shreveport has always been Cowboys territory because (as the managing editor of the Times once told me) one phone call from the East Texas oilman who owned half the TV station would get the station manager fired. It happened once when a station manager decided to show the Saints. The station showed Cowboys, period.

Look at a broadcast coverage area map. Now, overlay that with an oilfield map. The people in the oilfield area own Shreveport.
