Question for Shreveport/N. La fans (1 Viewer)

Old Shreveport Times reporter here.

Monroe was always Saints territory because former Louisiana Governor James A. Noe (KNOE-TV, radio) was on the Saints bandwagon from the get-go.

Shreveport has always been Cowboys territory because (as the managing editor of the Times once told me) one phone call from the East Texas oilman who owned half the TV station would get the station manager fired. It happened once when a station manager decided to show the Saints. The station showed Cowboys, period.

Look at a broadcast coverage area map. Now, overlay that with an oilfield map. The people in the oilfield area own Shreveport.

Very interesting analysis. You may have just solved the great debate as to why Shreveport has so many Cowgirl fans! They were forced to watch them all those years.

It wasn't hard to force Shreveporters to watch the Cowboys when the Saints were 1 - 15.

That year, even the Noe family showed the Cowboys on KNOE. Seriously!

My wife and thus my in-laws are from Shreveport. Her two brothers are cowboys fans, in fact, there is a photo of my wife in some kind of cowboys jacket.

That said, if your formative football years (seven years old and up) were in the late 70's thru the 80's, you were a cowboys fan in Shreveport. This is assuming your parents or relatives had no preference.

Also, Shreveport's big city is Dallas, not New Orleans. People gravitate toward their local big city. I am sure it gets ugly in the Ohio area in terms of who cheers for who.

Another thing, is their is a divide between north and south Louisiana. Same for Mississippi and Alabama for that matter. There should have been made a gulf state called Louisiana that ran from Lake Charles to Mobile up to Hattiesburg and back across thru Alexandria and so on. The other state would be northern half of the three states. I am not saying this is how it should have happened, just that there is a bit of a common cultural divide between north/south in these three states.

What year is this again?

Right on! There is a big cultural divide between north and south Louisiana. We should be two different states. I mean, do you know of a state where so few miles away from each other they sound so different. Dang it! Mais yeah!

I always said that Louisiana should be 2 different states until my sister recently married a man from Houma and I now realize that is a very foolish statement. We are all so alike in so many ways. It's just that we don't take the time to get to know each other. Sure, there are those obvious cultural differences but deep down, we are all the same people.

i just dont understand that and never really will. it doesnt matter if dallas is closer in proximity than new orleans is, the saints are still the team from your home state. no matter how much some of the local residents want it to be, shreveport is not in texas, its in louisiana. no matter where i grew up i would always be a fan of the pro sports team in my state. as a louisiana man i will support my louisiana teams.

to me, people who embrace another states team primarily because the team has been historically better should be embarassed. i think its weak that people in the northwest of LA and even in lake charles and alexandria support texas teams over louisiana teams. i just dont get it and never will. i always have and always will support my home team and home state.

You would think that Shreveport would have been full of Steelers fans because of Terry Bradshaw back in the day. I was born and raised in Monroe and I was a Dallas fan in the 70's when I was a wee one, but at some point I made the switch to the Saints. I can't say why I liked Dallas, but I loved Roger Staubach. Maybe my parents disliked the Steelers because Terry went to La. Tech and they had gone to NLU so they liked the Dallas Cowboys.

See my post above, its not all about winning(although certainly some of it is from the Saints being bad over the first 20 years and the Cowboys being very good in the 70's), many people in Louisiana(South Louisiana included) have a jealous/envious/dislike for New Orleans.........Not saying its right or that everybody is like that but it is a general attitude that is their that is very real. Like I said it comes from a country/city rivalry as well as the very clanish attitude(and histories) many Louisianaian's have.....I agree with you though that I support a Louisiana team before a Texas team.

Just to clarify

Just to clarify, I'm from the Shreveport/Bossier Area.
originally from New Jersey, but moved here when I was 10 back in 1977.
as a young lad, was a Jets fan. But once I moved here, my mother who was born in New Orleans, my father born in Bossier City, and both LSU graduates. We were all quick to latch onto the Saints and LSU football.

Yes there are OTHER Saints fans here in the area, the local T.V. stations get blasted regardless of who they choose to play, saints or dallas. The Local FOX affiliate the last couple of years has done a good job I think of switching back and forth, when ever there has been a "choice" to be made. There's been times I had to run down to a local bar to watch the game because it wasn't being shown on local t.v... the bar being full of Saints fans, it was always fun. I chose this year to get the DirecTV NFL package.. MAN DID I CALL THAT ONE RIGHT :)

However, YES there are plenty of Dallas fans in the area.. and they all make me ill :)
and yes there is a Cowboys STORE in the freakin' mall, even my young sons can't make sense of that!! And as someone mentioned, there are a number of Steelers' fans in the area, probably the Bradshaw connection, and the Steeler and Cowboy matchups over the years.. Those years the Saints did poorly, I'd find myself watching Cowboy games JUST to root for the other team.

Just wanted to let you all know NOT EVERYONE up here is a Dallas fan.
and me personally, a long time Saints fans, so are my children, and we have plenty of ties to you good folks DOWN YONDER.

I agree.
Louisiana citizens who support the Cowgirls are dead to me. :bash: I can understand fans in MS and AL since they don't have a pro team, though we do reach into the FL panhandle a bit.
