We all know that the lack of any official offseason programs will in no way have a positive effect on conditioning. I just read an article quoting Hayward of the Steelers, the team player rep. He is saying that he is not sure if he would play even if there is a season. He is talking to his family and will make the decision later if the teams play.

But, my question and concern is the individual player conditioning programs. We all know the players have to be dedicated 110% to conditioning to have a good chance to stay healthy during a season. I suspect Hayward's thoughts about playing this season are also in the minds of many players. And I also suspect that doubt of the season happening may impact the level of total commitment to offseason conditioning not knowing if all the grind of training will even be used this season.

1) Can the majority of players get themselves into prime condition with doubts about actually playing this year swirling in their heads? 2) Will 6-weeks of training camp and preseason games be enough to get the players into peak condition for the season?

Thx all!

It’s possible if the players have been doing a good job in the offseason. The problem is going to be roster management as players will have to be rotated in and out quite a bit as I doubt that high level of conditioning will be there in the majority. Lots more sprains and strains I’m guessing. Soft tissue injuries will be bad, and that’s not even addressing if players get Covid and the huge step it will be to get conditioning back after a bout of that and 2 weeks at least away. If the games get played, and I’m doubting they will, it will be nice to have 2 proven starting QBs and the depth the Saints have. I can’t imagine teams won’t need it this year.

Since a decision hasn't been made league wide as of yet if a player decides to come into camp in less than top physical condition they're doing it at their own peril.

Sean Payton already sent out a memo to his players when they decided not to have virtual training sessions that come training camp they need to be in the best shape of their lives.

If a player decides not to do that then someone will be taking their job from them no matter who they are.

I think most vets know how to stay in regular shape but I don't know if that's in pads football shape.

I think the biggest issue is simply going to be change in routine
I would imagine a fair number of football layers are creatures of habit
How do their bodies respond to change in routine as well as whatever residual stress they are managing?

Yes, it will definitely have an effect on player conditioning and likely/sadly, bring with it a greater risk of injury. At least it'll be an even playing field. I think this is why Sean Payton decided on the plan he did. "Guys, let's make a deal. We won't have off-season activities regardless if they're allowed or not. Enjoy your free time. In return, I ask that you show up for camp in the best shape of your lives."

Most players are training throughout the year anyway. You rarely hear stories these days of players coming into camp out of shape.

The lack of contact, which is minimal even with a full offseason program, may hurt early on, but we are a veteran team and should be fine. We may also see a few mental errors early, but we should be fine. Young teams may have a tougher time.

This offseason is definitely vantage Saints. Out of all the Super Bowl contenders the Saints have the most experience of playing together. Plus there are very few players the Saints have to integrate into the team.
