Andrew Sachs, the much loved Fawlty Towers actor, dies aged 86

[John] Cleese paid tribute to him on Thursday night, saying: "Just heard about Andy Sachs. Very sad.... I knew he was having problems with his memory as his wife Melody told me a couple of years ago and I heard very recently that he had been admitted to Denham Hall, but I had no idea that his life was in danger.

"A very sweet gentle and kind man and a truly great farceur. I first saw him in Habeas Corpus on stage in 1973. I could not have found a better Manuel. Inspired."

Cleese once said of Sachs: "He just made me laugh till it hurt."

"If you meet Andrew you would call him almost retiring, very quiet, almost academic, studiously polite," he said. "Then suddenly he clips on his moustache and something else in his personality just slips in."

I honestly think Manuel was funnier than Mr Fawlty.

I tried showing Fawlty Towers to my kids, but even though they love Monty Python, they just couldn't get into the pacing of the long-play build-up comedy it tended to employ.

I'll have another crack at it soon I'm sure.

Loved him! Loved that show. I really wish they had made a lot more episodes.

Awesome show that too many people of this side of the pond don't know about.

Que? Que?
This.

I remember watching FT before cable existed. My father was a redneck and the last person you'd think would enjoy BBC (he just couldn't understand why anyone in the world could enjoy Monte Python), but I remember my him laughing at FT so hard that he couldn't breathe.

My father was living in La Place when Holy Grail was released. He says he was the only one in the theater laughing, and that he was dying laughing.

Caught Eric Idle and John Cleese last night at their show at the Saenger last night (great show), and Cleese spoke about FT, and how it started, and Manuel, had me jonesing for some FT. Watching it with my wife (who has never watched it), timeless.
