Come on a know a good bunch of you guys have had one or currently have one. While I don't speed all the time, I do drive over the speed limit at times because I'm late or I just want to get ahead of those clowns that drive below the speed limit.

I had a Radioshack one (piece of work model) for about 3 years. While it may have been that particular model, I must say that it saved me from an extraordinary fine or even jail time at least 5 times. That $89 was well spent. I did get a ticket once though but that was because I didn't trust it. It had been going haywire the whole day so I just said screw it. Little did I know that State Trooper was just around that curb. :(

I just spent $299 on a Escort Passport 8500 X50 and I must say that I'm impressed. It totally pwns that Radioshack one more than 20 times over. It freaking picks up the radar waves from over a mile away! With that Radioshack one 85% of the time I saw the cop before it even went off. With my Passport I don't even know where the cop is.

I would highly recommend it to any of you guys.

I got the one with the red led lights because I didn't want to spend an extra $25 for the blue version.

radar works by sending out signals that bounce back to the device which calculates the signal and determines the speed. a radar detector detects this signal and the way it does this is by being hit by the signal. therefore if your detector is being hit by the signal you have been clocked or could have been clocked. i use my radar by observing a speeding vehicle then activating the radar to verify the speed. i have people tell me all the time i didnt use radar because they did pic it up.. but that because ill just have it on for maybe a second each time im fire it.

Southland is right, a lot of times police will flick on the radar right when you are on top of them. The only time radar detectors are really worth anything is when they are sitting and clocking everyone. I have a Cobra ESD-6100 VG-2 LaserEye, standard 6 band.

PS: Its a $100 fine if you are caught using one in the state of Virigina. They have radar detector detector's...I found out the hard way.

the best thing to get is a radar jammer.. ive been jammed by them twice in 7 years. man do they work..

I travel a LOT, and I did get a ticket in Olla when I wasn't paying attention to the speed change. It was so stupid though, the speed limit changes from 65, then quickly to 55, then the road opens up into 4 lanes 2 going both ways....and the speed limit drops to 45. I think they clocked me at about 54. I wasn't trying to speed. I just wasn't looking for the signs.

That stupid town is just out there to make money...that is probably the only reason they 4 laned for that mile of town.

Anywho....I have since watched the "reduced speed" signs very carefully, but I do like to go over by at least 5mph, somtimes up to 10 depending.

So i thought of getting one...Are they illigal??

Certain models can't be detected by the detector detector.
Valentine 1 comes to mind.

You must be using instant on...

ESCORT detectors can receive the signal well before the transmitted signal can bounce off its object and return to the transmitter. (One exception to this is if the officer is using a method called "instant on." In this case, the officer waits until a vehicle is within its range, and then turns on the transmitter. Under this scenario, a good detector will warn you ahead of time since it is sensitive enough to detect this burst of signal when the officer targets the vehicles in front of you).

So basically I'm caught if you are using "instant on" and there are no other cars in sight. Although since I would have probably seen you well down the road, I wouldn't have been speeding anyway. I slow down rather a cop has their radar on or not; it would be plenty stupid to be speeding by a cop anyway.

According to Radarbusters.com the only the detector that can defeat all radar detector detectors is The STi Driver. There are saying that it was the first and only one that has been able to do it.

So this poses the question, what is the legality of the jammer? Do you know you're being jammed? Will you pull me over for jamming you? I'm intrigued.

radar jammers are out there , they are very expensive from what Ive heard. however, they are very effective. when i was hit with them my radar would go off the charts with no way of getting readings.
instant on works like this.
ill be watching the flow of traffic it might be 1 or 12 cars i dint turn on the radar till i see one speeding .. so if your the only car speeding your tagged.
in GA we have to be able to id. speeding cars withing 2 miles a hours by eyesight . the radar only confirms what we see. its sounds crazy i know but looking at a car and judging its speed visually is very easy.

Why don't you take them to jail?

FAQ: Is it a federal felony to jam, or attempt to jam, police radar guns?

YES: In December of 1977, the FCC banned the use of both active and passive radar products and accessories.

we have no way of knowing who has the jammer. each time ive been jammed it lasted for approximately 1 min so i had no way of determining which auto carried the jammer.
