As a rule of thumb, players who are not very good don't usually sign several multi-million dollar contracts. At the very least you can try to argue what makes him such a bad player.

Spears is one of the better run stopping 34 ends in the league. He would have been a great signing for depth. Plus he is a whole lot younger and probably better than Will Smith at this point for less money.
