30 million + cap hits for the next three seasons, and no real out because of all the dead money.

If crippling a franchise were an art, the Rams front office would be Rembrandt.

Jared Goff has a $94 Million Dead Cap hit for this season...

they should never need to trade him or release him THIS season but that signing bonus/guaranteed figure is straight up astonishing.

Please elaborate on your title? What does Goff contract have to do with us? Not trying to be a smart butt but really trying understand it.

I believe the contract was drawn up for the long term considering the increased revenues coming within the next yr. Goff's number should still be manageable within the cap. This way they dont have to worry about the player trying to holdout for increases.

I do kind of see what they were trying to do, the main issue is Goff's play hasn't been worthy of that cap number considering how reliant he is on his Head Coach, Play-caller guiding him through pre-snap adjustments before communication is cut off... the moment his running game, and O-line play dipped he subsequently fell off miserably and could not elevate the play of his team. Which is kind of what you would hope a QB with a $30 mil cap hit would do..

Even then you can stomach your QB taking up 30 mil of cap space if he's decent, but what makes it worse for them is all the other terrible contracts they've dished out. For instance they had to cut Gurley just recently but they still owe him $11.8 Mil against their cap for this year, and another $8.4 Mil for him next year in 2021. Brandin Cooks has a $16.8 million cap hit for this year and next year, and if they cut or trade him it's still $13 mil in Dead cap hit.

That's not even factoring they gave up their next Two first round picks for Jalen Ramsey and he hasn't even been extended yet.. and he's going to want to be the Highest Paid Corner in the NFL.... The Rams are basically a perfect example of how Not to manage your cap and be in a rush to dish out premium extensions before players make it through Year 4 of their rookie deals.

Not bad for a quarterback who has to take instruction from his coach almost up to the snap of the ball on each play.

Their cap situation is incredibly bad, and they also have a lack of first round picks and still need to re-sign Jalen Ramsey. They're going to be a very top heavy team, but are going to have to make sacrifices in certain areas, such as the offensive line, and Goff isn't that great to begin with. Unless they get very lucky with a few jackpot late rounders, they're going to be in 7-9/8-8 hell for awhile.

When you really study their roster, especially after what they've lost or had to get rid of this off-season, you quickly realize that this is not a very good football team anymore.

The Rams cap situation is what happens when you ignore the low cap numbers created by your own draft picks, particularly those outside the top 15 who over perform. The Rams' team that went from bottom dwellers had (2016) Goff, (2015) Gurley, and (2014) Donald as home grown players, but when your RB and DT get offensive and defensive player of the year before their big extensions you are handi-salary capped. Before that none of the first rounders are with the franchise. They let Robert Quinn go for nothing. Tavon Austin and Olgetree are gone. Greg Robinson was a total bust at number 2 overall the same year they drafted Donald. Then 2017 to 2021 zero first round picks after the Jalen Ramsey trade. In that they also acquired Brandin Cooks. But Cooks and Ramsey are on top contracts. Other players like Marcus Peters was jettisoned in a contract year. Aquib Talib, Sammy Watkins, Clay Mathews, and Dante Fowler are all former first rounders that have signed and left Los Angeles. The best young players they may have drafted for cheap are Cooper Cupp.

This is the top five cap hits on spotrac ( I am not sure how the gurley number reflects post release)

That is 108.75 million in five players or 53.36 of their cap

In comparison for the Saints we can fit our top ten cap hits to get to the same percentage of the cap and players like Lattimore, Hill, Murray, Davenport, Ramczyk, Marcus Williams, Erik McCoy, and Alvin Kamara are not even in that group because we have drafted so well.

The Rams have tried to cheat the system by bad cap wrecking trades because they gave up draft picks. The Saints excellent drafting has allowed the Saints to acquire players like Jenkins, Cook, and Murray in free agency. We will have to pay Lattimore and Ramcyyk soon and that likely means Brees is gone and a cap friendly rookie QB or Hill is required to make the puzzle work.
