Until I saw the video of Payton talking to the officials, I did not know that a coach could select the direction at the beginning of the second half. Payton must have been aware of something like that research.

Whoever starts the game kicking off gets to choose which direction to kick so I'm guessing it's the same for the 2nd half. Or maybe it was a Jedi mind trick.
