Anyone know of any good, reputable Doberman Pinscher breeders in or around Baton Rouge or surrounding areas? I'm willing to pay top dollar or close to it. I think it's worth it. We've always treated pets as family members in our family, so I want to be sure that I get a quality puppy.

I dont know of any in the Baton Rouge area, but speaking from an experienced DP owner (4) myself; you've choosen a very good breed of dog..... Very devoted animals and one of the most loyal I've ever come across.... Good luck on your search.

Thanks. A friend of mine has a fawn Doberman and it's one of the sweetest dogs I know. He looks intimidating and has a mean bark, but on the inside he's just a big ol' baby. I'd prefer to find a breeder as close to Baton Rouge as possible but most anywhere in Louisiana would be okay.

A friend of mine in NJ had two of the sweetest Dobes I've ever met. She did have the ears cropped on her dogs, and their names were Spock and Tuvok. I thought those were great names for them!

If you're looking for a breeder, look for a show dog breeder. Not every pup in a litter will be show quality, but they will come from mentally and physically stable stock (can't be a show dog with bad hips and a poor temperment), so you should get a good one. Meet the dam if you can. Those pups that are determined not show quality are still gorgeous animals, and the breeders want to sell them to good homes...if you're not screened thoroughly as a potential owner, go elsewhere. A good breeder wants to make sure the pups are going to GOOD homes, and will keep them until he/she feels the right homes come along.

That would be my preferance. I bought a Beagle from a show dog breeder a few years ago in Lake Charles. Unfortunately I had to return her due to health problems. One of the upsides of paying $1500 for a Beagle was the health guarantees. Other than that I really enjoyed dealing with the breeder. She was very informative and honest and she screens potential owners so that's why I would like to go the same route.

Yes, that is the upside. Sorry what happened with the Beagle; I know from breeding some litters of dachshunds that sometimes no matter how much screening you do and how much you research the dogs in the pedigree, there may be a gene that pops up after generations, or sometimes something shows up with simply no explanation, and then you've got a problem. I had a wonderful little mini longhaired dachshund who was a hunting fiend, competed in obedience and worked as a model dog in advertising, and everyone wanted to breed to him...I never bred him, because he was epileptic. No way would I intentionally put someone else through that.

I'll check with some friends and see if they know of any Dobe breeders in your general area. I'll pm you if I find anyone. I may still have my show catalog from last year's Reliant Dog Shows; I'll look in the Dobe section and see if any of the owners/breeders are from Louisiana.

I would appreciate that, primadox.

Dobies are great, they are very needy regarding exercise and space. I have had a couple of them. All hail Ella R.I.P. She was such a sweet girl.

My aunt has a ranch in Floresville, TX where she breeds show-quality dobermans and dachshunds. Probably a little too far for you, though.
