Restructuring of Drew Brees' contract now could create major headaches later (1 Viewer)

At least we didn't give that money to a guy like Joe Flacco, which is what happened when Will Smith (and Charles Grant) got his contract...other great players at his position were getting big money, and he was better than what could be brought in to replace him, but not really in the same league as guys like Freeney...so he gets a fat contract for being the 12th or so best player at his position. Flacco is probably better than 12th, but there are fewer QBs than DEs.

I have no problem with Drew getting paid, and the cap hit just comes with that. Drew also saves them so much money because they don't have to go out and sign high-priced receivers or running backs. He also played for a couple of years at well below his market value.

They need to pay for some guys on defense, but we need to make sure they're the right guys. Will Smith does not deserve his contract. Harper could probably be replaced for cheaper.

I like flacco but i think he will be one of the biggest FA busts in history.

It's already be stuctured to be somewhat friendly in the beginning. I doubt they even ask him to touch it. He just signed it less than a year ago, Loomis knew what was coming.

Sorry, but they almost have to redo it. They need the cap space and his contract is, by far, the biggest on the team. I wouldn't be surprised if they had an agreed upon restructure plan in place when he signed it.

The Saints will be able to cut him just like any other player. His contract is really a 3 year 61 million dollar deal with a team option for the 4th and 5th years. If his performance doesn't match his pay he will be cut or forced to sign a lesser deal.

OMG, the voice of reason. :9:

This team has a 3 year window to win. After that, a complete year down in probably likely anyway, so why not push everything to the right?

I could see them adding a year or maybe 2 before the 2015 season. Spread those last 2 years out. If 2 years then make last year not guaranteed.

something will eventually have to give because Saints can't have one players contract eating so much of their cap space. Isn't Brees' contract structured to where they can release him after two more seasons without penalty?

I wouldn't be surprised if Saints are looking at QBs early in next years draft

Think so...wouldnt be shocked if he is released in about 3 years.

Yes, Mickey Loomis knows what he is doing. The only hit would be the dead prorated signing bonus which is $7.4million per season. So if they cut him after year 3 there would be a $14.8million cap hit but that would save them $39 million in actual salary. Most NFL contracts are backloaded.

I doubt Loomis will touch Drew's contract. It is already so back-loaded, that pushing any money to future years could really hurt the franchise.

2013: 17.4 mil.
2014: 18.4 mil.
2015: 26.4 mil.
2016: 27.4 mil.

Only thing we could do is add another year, as poster above already said, but I doubt Drew would do this. Drew is a great player, but if he wanted to give the team a discount or a team-friendly contract he would have done it last summer.

I realize this is a very unpopular opinion but while drew deserved n deserves every dollar he received, we will never field a complete team until after he's gone and his contract is off the books...

Our window is closed and at best, we'll be a great offense with a below average defense and right now I'm wondering how we're going to resign an average left tackle in Bushrod...

A great QB is a blessing and a curse at the same time... There's no way in the world you can let a guy like Brees, Manning, Brady, Rodgers walk but to pay them cripples the team...

The two teams in the Super Bowl were much more complete top to bottom then the saints and you can look at both teams qb's, both good QBs on there 1st contract... But after Flaco signs his new contact, they won't be able to keep that team together...
