Restructuring? (1 Viewer)

The problem with “kicking the can down the road” is the money pushed forward into the future doesn’t just disappear when those restructured players retire, are released, or are traded. Instead it is still due the years it was pushed forward into. This is “dead money”. Essentially you are paying players no longer on the roster or on someone else’s roster. This “Dead Money” counts against the salary cap. Just one example - David Onyemata is now an Atlanta Falcon and he will still count for $10 million against the Saints salary cap this year.

Every team kicks the can, but most kick it within the actual duration of the contract, and they try not to kick it again after the first year signing bonus. That helps to minimize dead money for players not on your team.

Some dead money is better than none because it shows the team is taking risks to be competitive, but there is A fine line between risk taking and recklessness.

And FYI the Saints have $22 million in Dead Money this year. Roughly 10% of their $224,800,000 Salary Cap is paying for guys on other teams. That $22 million would be pretty handy in Free Agency about now.

But its 22 million less we would’ve had in the past if we had it now. And for us to have had it in the past we would’ve had to let those players go anyway but let them go sooner rather than later.

Not really. You can make deals work if you want. We made the biggest signing of FA of anyone so far.

We didn’t match deals for our DTs because the unit underperformed and we didn’t match Elliss because we already have two starters (although I think he’s gonna be good).

Plenty of teams with supposedly healthy caps lose players. Everyone makes decisions.

They should be able to offset that $22mil by borrowing from 24, 25, and 26 if they want to. The only limit is an owner who is willing to shell out cash upfront.
