Jets respect Saints - but they're not scared
WWL Radio, Kristian Garic Reporting

The Jets head coach talked with the New Orleans media this week, the first words out of Rex Ryan's mouth were, "Please tell me Drew Brees is not playing." Of course Ryan was kidding, but it shows the respect they have for Krewe de Drew.

The Media meets with the head coach of the Saints opponent each week, and typically there isn't a lot of colorful moments, but this one was different.

"I'll be honest with you, I'm really not looking forward to this one," Ryan said.

"I like the personnel there in New Orleans," Ryan explained when asked about the Saints revamped defense. He also described the Black and Gold offense and quarterback Drew Brees as "a nightmare to go against."

Sounds like they've already lost.

Ryan knows he's not playing a rehabbing Tom Brady, and his prize QB isn't facing a Patriots defense missing 5 starters from last year, and he's not in his house this time...

Jets fans may not know... Some Jet players may not know... But Rex knows what he's facing Sunday.

Wow. Wrecks sounds pretty classy too. Maybe he has their entire team trying the reverse psychology thing.,

I mean, let's be honest, it's not like the Saints and Jets are bitter rivals. The only reason he got so worked up for the Patriots game was because he knows how big the rivalry is for his players and his fans. I think he knew that his comments would get the Patriots fired up, but perhaps he thought they'd get his own team even more fired up. In retrospect, I guess he was right. On the other hand, the Saints aren't a big rivalry game, and I don't think he sees a real advantage to ticking us off. In my view, he's just adopting a different strategy for a different game. Seems like a really smart coach to me.

I've been a big fan of Rex since I found out he was going to coach the jets. This guy is a GREAT coach, not to mention he's hilarious.

This sunday, I hope we smash the crap out of the Jets, but I'll stll have major respect for rexxy.

I also will continue to respect Rex Ryan after Sunday.

It may be that speaking to players straight up makes it easier to get them to do what they're supposed to be doing, at least in Rex Ryan's mind. He might be right.

Try to imagine how the game might go for the Jets is Ryan pumped them all full of what's on the Jets message boards.

Sounds like psycho tricks to me.

More mind games or maybe a minute of just plain honesty? Hard to say. If nothing else it shows he knows the headaches the Saints give a coaching staff. I guarantee Payton respects Ryan's Defense and has been losing as much sleep as Ryan scheming against it.

You don't expect Ryan to give the team some bulletin board material, do you?

Our D might win this one for us again. But honestly I think we put up 30+ points on them.

Sounds to me like he's trying to keep his team loose. Sean Payton tried the same thing in 2006, actually right before the Ravens game. Sort of deal where you take over a team, build to a fever pitch moment, and suddenly you've surprised yourself with how much success you've had that quickly.

So now you want to backpedal a bit loosen things up, keep them from playing too tight and getting to devastated by the inevitable setbacks of a NFL season.

Perhaps this is also a part of the reason Rex was so honest in his PC. I really don't think he's looking forward to facing us in the Dome with half of his secondary missing:

Cornerback Lito Sheppard (quad) and top-notch nickelback Donald Strickland (ankle) missed their second straight day of practice Thursday and neither is expected to play on Sunday at New Orleans.
