File this under the **** show that is the Twitter Corp. It's a shame because the Twitter platform itself serves a valuable and very specific purpose. I hope they don't ruin that as well.

Important News about Vine
Since 2013, millions of people have turned to Vine to laugh at loops and see creativity unfold. Today, we are sharing the news that in the coming months we’ll be discontinuing the mobile app.

Nothing is happening to the apps, website or your Vines today. We value you, your Vines, and are going to do this the right way. You’ll be able to access and download your Vines. We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website.

Thank you. Thank you. To all the creators out there — thank you for taking a chance on this app back in the day. To the many team members over the years who made this what it was — thank you for your contributions. And of course, thank you to all of those who came to watch and laugh every day.

What’s next? We’ll be working closely with creators to make sure your questions are answered and will work hard to do this the right way. We’ll be sharing more details on this blog and our Twitter account, and will notify you through the app when we start to change things.

Looks like Twitter pulled the Bill Gates buyout method

Don't they own Periscope now? That ability to live stream is the future of this all I think, and they need to focus on it providing an alternative to Facebook Live.

There's some funny Vine eulogies going on Twitter right now.

True, but I think Periscope and Vine are different in how they are/were primarily used.

I think Vine was done when Twitter built-in better video upload support.

The writing had been on the wall for a while. Vine was pretty fad driven initially, and after that huge burst of popularity it fell off a cliff pretty quickly as everyone tried to become a Vine star and it just created a glut of content. These days it seemed like people were mostly using it for sports clips, which Twitter probably wasn't fond of given the deals it's trying to strike with leagues for streaming and the like.

Twitter as a company is completely directionless. The platform itself has a niche, as you say a specific one, but it has no broad appeal. For all the talk about "how Twitter reacted" and "What Twitter's saying" and newsreaders using tweets as man of the street ballast for their 24 hour cycles, the truth is it's lagging behind other social media platforms. It's growth is utterly stagnant. It lacks the youth appeal that drove things like Instagram and Snapchat to success. And it has very real problems with a toxic community. It's basically just people being snarky and ****** to each other. This is literally why potential buyers bailed earlier in the month. They liked certain things about the company but couldn't see a way forward because of how terrible the people that use it are. Think about that for a second.

Twitter is weird. It exists and people obviously use it but it's like the user base is totally frozen, as if everyone who would ever need or want to adopt it already has and no one else cares.

Pornhub has offered to buy Vine claiming it will "restore Vine to Its NSFW glory," adding that "clips of porn in six seconds is more than enough time for most people to enjoy themselves."
