I truly, sincerely hope that the Saints DO NOT hire Rob Ryan. Remember how stubborn Gregg Williams was? Or how there were rumblings that he had gone rogue? Or the comparisons to Mike Martz for trying to force a square peg into a round hole and while employing long developing complex schemes that were ineffective?
How many times have we seen GW send an all out blitz that never gets home while leaving the secondary exposed? How did the 50 million personnel packages work? If you can't maximize the talent you do have and master one defense, why try to master a numerous ones?
Simply put, the Saints don't have a finely tuned defense. They lack the talent on the back end to play coverage. They lack talent on the front end to get much needed pressure. They lack development on the defensive side of the ball.
Rob Ryan is just the 3-4's version of Gregg Williams. Care to guess how often he's been fired? What is he known for? I'll tell you-- he's known for sending numerous blitzes despite not having a secondary that can hold the fort till the pressure gets there. He's known for doing it his way and not adjusting his scheme or play-calling to the talent he's working with.
What the &$%!
We don't need his kind. I truly hope, despite what is being reported, that the Saints are only interviewing Rob Ryan to pick his brain on what he believes needs to be done to fix their defense. I truly hope the cast a wide net and get the same kind of assessment for 10 or 15 different candidates. It isn't like he's going anywhere. There's no hurry.
We damn sure don't need to see 6 and 7 people coming on the blitz and looking as if they are running into a brick wall while Blaine Gabbert or some other podunk QB looks like Peyton Manning picking our defense apart. Rob Ryan didn't have the answer for Drew Brees, and he didn't have the answer for Robert Griffin, nor did he have the answer for Eli Manning. He's always been a loud mouth outcast and never has he had a reputation for "playing well with others". Hiring him would be a step back.
The defense can't get any worse, but Rob Ryan would damn sure keep it from being built and utilized the right way.
