Robert Quinn Should Be The Priority Free Agent (1 Viewer)

To be honest, I saw this, thought 'Really?!' and stopped reading. I think the assessment is wrong and the need is to get Dav rehabbed and back in the line up creating pressures at the high rate he did last year.
I LOVE DAVENPORT!! But he is not the quick-twitch, explosive type of edge rusher that we need. Teams have learned that we will send extras in just about every big passing situation. Quinn eliminates the need for blitzers as much. If we come back with the same group we won't make the playoffs. Davenport, Hendrickson and Granderson are all stout for the future, but that title is available NOW! Quinn's deal ends as Davenport's rookie deal ends.

Everything described in the OP's assessment of Quinn can and should be embodied by Davenport. Nagging injuries have slowed Davenport's development, much like injuries did to Mark Ingram his first several seasons before he got truly in the groove at RB.
Quinn is a SACK MASTER!! Davenport has the ability to turn into an All Pro defensive end, but he'll never be the pass rush specialist that Quinn is. Quinn will never be the all around edge that Davenport is, but we need a DISRUPTER. Our offensive play caller has no intention of sustaining possessions so we must find a way to force more turnovers on defense.

I know this isn't the fundamentally sound way of roster building, but when you are as close as we one or two "specialty" or "lagniappe" players are usually the difference.

I agree with you as it pertains to the 2019 team...they definitely should have become more of a ball control team. The 2020 team needs to improve the talent in the passing game so they can play like the team they wanted to be in 2019 with Brees at the helm - 60/40 passing team. I would even argue that a #2 CB (something the team has struggled to find since 2017- Crawley, Apple, Jack Rabbit all started at some point) is more important than a designated pass rusher based on how Allen calls games (3 man rushes 8 DB's on the field)

Agreed on the balance....I think that guy is already on our roster if we choose to extend him, though he won't be cheap, I think Jenkins is the ball hawking CB we have been looking for....

Don't care about "taking over the league" I'm just trying to best utilize our personnel.

Exactly, I think our offensive line may be the best (and most underutilized) run-blocking oline in the NFL....we need to play to our strengths better....

Agreed on the disruption angle. That big a contract might disrupt the salary cap, though. We shall stay tuned, as always.

Ramchyk, McCoy, Warford, Peat and Armstead are all run blockers at heart. Our top two skill position players besides Thomas are Kamara and Murray. We have the top special teams unit in the league if Taysom remains in that capacity. I think our defense improves at least five spots in the ranking if we take air out of the ball. The overall core group is ROCK SOLID and seems to favor a more ball controlled style.

This group needs only one explosive play-maker on both sides of the ball.

why is the dude looking for a 4th team in 4 years?

and it seems like we would be looking for something we already have, a highly talented but oft injured rusher.

my personal feeling is that the sky is still the limit for Dav.
Timing is the key. Davenport is the future, Quinn the present. Quinn represents the part of Davenport game that hasn't quite gotten there yet: THE EXPLOSIVE EDGE RUSH. Normally, I'd patiently wait for the development of our prized possession, but not when we've knocked on the door four 3 years straight.

And to answer your question on why Quinn has moved, I think he's been misused a lot. Teams have forced him to try to be an edge setter in the run game and that has beaten him up. I think our depth allows us to feature him as a rush specialist almost exclusively. Offer him an incentive-based deal that rewards him for sack production and explain to him the benefits of getting low base pay to match the low run defense snaps. If he doesn't take one of those types of deals, I bet Vic Beasley will.

We gotta go take it.

well I see your point and agree that more depth would be wonderful. Davenport is going into year 3 though and has already showed flashes and that was while being hobbled by rather critical injuries. If he has healed completely (and I think that is a major if) he could finally hit on the type of player that you really hesitate to take off the field. So I would love to see us grab a FA there, I don't think we should tie up major money in doing so.

I tried. Continuousstreamofconsciousnesspostishardtofollow...
I'll double space for you next time and get it proofread.

The fact remains, we shouldn't go to war depending on Davenport and Hendrickson.

And i'll leave you with one last stream of consciousness: I'll take the Quinn and Eli Apple combo on 3rd and long over Davenport and any corner in the draft not named Okudah.

We don't need much. We just don't get a lot of penetration on defense. The bend but don't break approach has gotten us some great seasons recently, but it just hasn't been enough to get us over the top. Vic Beasley might be an even better option than Quinn as a pure rush specialist.

Our top priority should not be at a position where we have a freaking All-Pro and an very good youngster who has unlimited potential.

We are not good enough to have the luxury of upgrading one of our strongest positions.
That "P" word gets coaches fired quicker than slapping your boss. We're too close to the title to go to war dependent on Davenport again.

I could be wrong, but I don't think this is a Super Bowl defense as currently constructed. We played with our tails tucked in that Wildcard game because we coached not to lose.
