Archie Manning 1978. UPI NFC Player of the Year with a 7-9 record.
An award so prestigious it no longer exists. Meanwhile the actual MVP's team that year went 14-2.
The "valuable" part of the MVP award, whether people agree with the thinking it or not, generally means it goes to a guy on one of the top teams that year. Haven't seen anyone here argue Drew isn't in contention for offensive player of the year, but until the Saints do better, he's not in contention for the MVP.
The worst record for a team with the NFL MVP was 9-7 and that's when Barry Sanders was the third player ever to rush for 2000 yards (and they made the playoffs).
