I agree, run the dang ball. We were gashing them at 5 and 10 yards a pop for at least 90% of our running plays. They may have stuffed our run maybe once all night and a few times held us to one or two yards a carry. For the most part we were running right through them. If we had run more then the passing game would have opened up more. What happened to Emanuel Sanders and Cook tonight? They disappeared. TQS did his job well tonight. Brees was off, either overthrowing or underthrowing receivers

What happened to Taysom?

The run got abandoned again soon as the opponent leveled the score. Typical Payton.

But this was mostly on the defense.

Our play-calling was way more balanced in the 1st quarter (the one we didn't suck in). Granted, the defense didn't give our offense many chances in the 2nd half, but I don't think it's a coincidence we did way better in the quarter where we didn't just pass pass pass.

When you barely have the football because your defense is getting shredded with 10 play drive after 10 play drive, you can't really run the ball much. The Raiders had the ball for 36:18. We only had 23:42 time of possession because the defense couldn't get off the field.

Despite that, they ran for 112 yards as a team on 19 carries. And, most of Kamara's 9 catches were either behind the line or just past it which as usual is really just an extension of our running game. So the issue wasn't that we didn't run the ball. The issue was penalties, which also contributes to not being able to run as much, and a terrible interception by Brees. I mean, the glaring issue last night was the defense who couldn't cover anybody and couldn't get any pressure after the first quarter. The offense barely had the ball but when they did they were okay. Not close to the usual standard, but they still scored 24 points and without Michael Thomas.

19 carries at 6 yards a pop???? That is a dismal coaching failure by SP....we should have run it 30-35 times. With a 10 point lead and the ball another long drive running the ball down their throat would have demoralized the Raider defense....instead, SP decides to throw instead....he really needs to evaluate his poor decision making and make some adjustments....

Exactly. The time of possession was absolutely embarrassing

This pretty much sums it up. Penalties killed us, so we had to pass at times even when the run was working, and especially after not hardly touching the ball in the entire 3rd quarter.

from mercurynews.com - raiders report card

RUN DEFENSE:C-minus
New Orleans averaged 6.1 yards per carry with 19 carries for 112 yards. Alvin Kamara led the way with 112 yards on 19 carries. It looked at times if New Orleans could have steamrolled the Raiders had the Saints not gotten in so many bad down-and-distance situations due to their penalties (10 for 129 yards). The Raiders had no tackles for losses. The Raiders controlled the ball so effectively, especially in the third quarter, that New Orleans didn’t have enough snaps to attack with a running game that appeared able to control the game if given the chance.

That’s exactly why you run the ball. 112 yards divided by 19 carries = 5.8 yards per carry. You keep doing that and burning the clock, giving your defense time to catch their breaths until the opposing defense stops it. I love Payton but dang he is stubborn as can be when it comes to sticking with the Run game when it’s working!
