Saints: 21 penalties for 244 yards in eight quarters (1 Viewer)

My issue is that while many of the calls made against us are valid, how many of those same calls would have been overlooked had it been another team, or the Saints of LAST YEAR?

I can see how the refs as a whole might be looking at us with extra diligence this year, given the end of our season last year, and the subsequent indignation/rule change that ensued.

this isn't just a last 2 weeks development.... let's go back to the bye week

vs. ATL (NO - 12/90; ATL - 7/48)
@ TB (NO - 9/76; TB - 7/55)

that said... from last night's game... that block in the back penalty on the 3rd Qtr kickoff return was bogus AF... the block by Robertson was initiated on the front side and he shoved on the top of the defender's shoulder

and that penalty cost us 40+ yards

edit: we really need to dive deeper into this stat...

how many of these penalties gave our opponent an auto 1st down after a failed 3rd or 4th down play?

How many either gave our opponent or cost us 15+ yards (either direct or hidden)

The block in the back was a legit call last night. Watch the replay, it was sloppy technique on a block which had no bearing on that play. Blocks in The black are stupid undisciplined penalties. Special teams has become a stupid undisciplined unit. But I think Payton had enough of that last night. He was beyond pissed at that last onsides kick.

Also that intentional grounding was absolutely correct also. Brees was in the box. The ball landed between the lines with no one in the world around it. Notice how Brees didn’t even try to argue it. He couldn’t. It was a dumb play.
I so agree! Especially after SP talked about penalties last week. You would think that they would have coached up some discipline.
How many times have we seen "smart players" pull their arms up when the opposing player turns their backs to them?
I do think that there is some call bias. 9 sacks and no holding calls? Their oline either hates Matt Ryan or the refs are blind.

absolutely agree the call had to be made... Cam had his hands square in Ryan's back

problem is Tuttle's stiff arm sent Ryan into oblivion which made Cam's hands in the back look worse than it was

Yikes. This has to be addressed - and the answer isn’t just “the refs!”

Vs. CAR: 12 / 123
@ ATL: 9 / 121
Once again this post is total BS. It’s not just the calls against us. Teams playing us don’t get called for crap except pre snap penalties. Every borderline call goes against us.

I don’t think it was a “dumb” play at all. There was an unblocked rusher who was about to take Brees’ head off as soon as he got the snap.

And it was 3rd down. If you’re going to have to punt anyway (since the play was blown up from the start), then you might as well throw it away (even if it means taking the penalty) and save yourself from the brutal hit that was coming.

It’s why Brees was so mad at Easton (I think?) immediately after the play.

It wasn't a dumb play. He had 3 choices: take the sack and risk getting injured, throw the ball where it might be intercepted, or throw the ball and take the grounding call. He chose the best option.

Most of the penalties we are getting are actual or borderline penalties. My issue is that they're not calling the same penalties on our opponents. I've seen numerous holds, hands to the face and PI uncalled on opponents. Call it evenly or don't call them for either team. But the unbalanced flagging is driving me freaking crazy. It's the very reason I'm suspicious of the officiating and/or NFL. The rules are not being applied equally. As much as I don't like us committing penalties, if they're fairly called, I can direct my complaints to the players/coaches, but the way it is now, makes watching games hard. This has been a problem for a while now. 244-43 in penalties for/against is ridiculously slanted. Opponents having their most penalty free games of the season every time they play us says more about the officiating than anything else.

Wasn't a dumb play was an option route he threw inside option but Kamari ran outside .

More importantly, opponents called for almost none.
Literally just ordered this shirt....

It's time for Payton to go Singletary on the team. For every valid penalty the offender gets to run wind sprints the next practice day. If injured then once he can play again.

This is the biggest reason in why we aren't blowing out teams. Flags on every ST play, on too many third downs in passing situations, and too many personal fouls.
So all those Dropped Passes in the endzone and the missed tackles from the safeties had nothing to do with it? just the penalties....

Find me the bit where I said ONLY reason. I'm pretty sure I said biggest reason.

Not making excuses, because it definitely needs to be cleaned up, but it’s almost one of those things where if you are going to get called for bullshirt anyway, you might as well do the bullshirt you’re getting called for.
