Saints are confident Coby Fleener will become a bigger part of the offense

By Nick Underhill -- Advocate

Coby Fleener probably would have scripted a different introduction.

After last week’s loss to the New York Giants, the game in which he dropped a pass and made two receptions on eight targets, he classified the performance as a “bad day at the office.” It seems fair to assume that he and the Saints weren’t envisioning many of those when he signed a five-year, $36 million deal to join the team this offseason.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean his future is going to be littered with days like that. It’s a process. The situation needs more time on task, as the Saints like to say. And, besides, it might be worth noting that Ben Watson had five catches for 31 yards at this point last season on nine targets. He finished the year with 74 catches for 825 yards.

So, no, the Saints aren’t worried. Not after two weeks. That doesn’t mean the team is content with how things have started with Fleener, who has three receptions for 35 yards. Coach Sean Payton said earlier this week that he’d like to see more consistency from his tight end. But no one is ringing an alarm or throwing their hands up at this early juncture.

I don't understand why we didn't keep Ben Watson ?
Watson with the Ravens: Benjamin Watson signed a 2 year, $7,000,000 contract with the Baltimore Ravens, including a $2,000,000 signing bonus, $3,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $3,500,000. In 2016, Watson will earn a base salary of $1,000,000, a signing bonus of $2,000,000 and a roster bonus of $1,000,000. Watson has a cap hit of $3,000,000 while his dead money value is $4,000,000.

Fleener: Saints.. a five-year, $36 million deal Hands of stone.... smh..

Of course its a moot point now that Watson is out this season with an injury but sure makes you say "what if..."

Nothing like a "W" to change your perspective.

I believe waking up to Tuesday morning next week will be a great experience for WhoDat fans!

Fleener will come back with a vengeance. #Hoping4B&G

Maybe because we are trying to now follow the Patriot way of letting go a year early rather than a year late?

We should've went after Martellus Bennett.

Uh oh, does that mean he will be released tomorrow?
This was a joke at Payton's expense, not Fleener. Some of y'all need to lighten up!

I think the odds are that Fleener's performance does improve. Brees has had so much success with so many different tight ends, you'd expect even an average tight end to be productive in the Saints offense. I don't think Fleener is that good but even still, it would be really strange for him to not become more of a contributor.

Watson had a slow start because he was playing second fiddle to Hill but he just couldn't be held back. He was brought in as a blocker mainly.

Fleener was bought in to catch passes and paid far beyond a level he's ever produced at. Going back to his time with Colts he's had issues with drops. It'll get better, it has to, but I'll be surprised if he ever plays up to his contract.

Having confident in a player is one thing, but does he has the talent to step up is another. Saints FO is a mess. From the " make it happen Loomis down to the coaching staff. We suck at signing FA and drafting players.
