Saints are hopeful that physical approach to camp pays off

HOUSTON — James Laurinaitis didn’t think about it for very long.
This camp is hard. So, hard, in fact, that he said he hasn't been in camp like this since the new collective bargaining agreement was put in place. That ended the days of the long, hard practices, and ushered in a different era of training camp.
There is less hitting, fewer practices, and, well, less physicality during the summers than there was before. But the Saints have worked to change that this summer. If the pads are out, there’s a good chance the players will be hitting each other.
There’s a reason for that.
“It’s going to be physical on Sundays,” Laurinaitis said. “I think the main thing is really you’re going to get a lot of game-like experience and reps when you go live. There’s really no simulation for making real-life tackles and taking off blocks and shedding and trying to make plays after doing that. It’s good. The team has embraced it, and I think we’ve fought through a lot of it.”
