Saints Bring Players in for Tryouts (2 Viewers)

Tryouts, you say?

Scoring TDs negates the outcome of FGs. Some of the most conservative Saints offense in history was the result of one of the best K in NFL history being on the Saints roster in the 80s and 90s. I loved Morten Anderson, and I was glad he played for the Saints, instead of against them (yeah, yeah, I know....); but I firmly believe that once Carl Smith was in FG range (past the 50 for Mort), they took their foot off the gas thinking "we got 3 if we don't mess it up."..

To be fair, the Saints defense back then made that decision a lot easier. it is easier to kick field goals when your defense is allowing 13 points a game.

You have a point. I would only add that the defense tended to allow scores in multiples of 3. So the 13 points you reference was most likely to be 9, 12 or 15 points. 13 points would suggest that a TD was allowed. Back then, if the Saints D allowed a TD, it was usually a loss, because the Saints O just couldn't keep up with that kind of offensive production.

I understand your logic. but also that is just an average. In 91 the Saints averaged giving up 13.2 points a game. Then in 92 they gave up 12.6 a game. Man, that was some sweet defense there.

His missed kicked wasn't taken for 6 the other way ... Lultz just kicks so low that blocking his kicks is too easy ... even one of the kicks that he made against the raiders in week 1 was tipped ....

Are you really that blind ?

Forbath missed an easy kick the other night against the Eagles. He wasn't the answer either way. I agree though as far as I wish our kicking situation would get fixed. While it isn't the main reason by any means it has greatly affected the outcome of both games.

Seems you are confusing Forbath with Barth. Forbath is not on a team right now (to my knowledge). Barth kicks for the Bears.

If they weren't bringing in players there would be a thread started and probably 8 pages long already asking why the team is standing pat....

I'll take your word for it Jack! My post was meant to be somewhat tongue in cheek. Of course we could both be correct, as I don't see any reason why allowing points in multiples of 3 couldn't average out to 13pg over a whole season? LOL!

Agreed on the defense. I don't think we'll ever see that level of viciousness in the NFL again, but I'd like to be feared for something on that side of the ball. Even with financial incentives in the 3G era, we only rose to mediocrity...

If the Mannings are the preferred supplier of QBs in the NFL, does anyone know if Vaughn Johnson had children? If anyone ever hit with bad intentions, it was VJ! I love that dude! To this day, still my favorite LB of ALL TIME!

sorry. just one of those days where I tend to run off at the mouth. Wasn't it Roger Craig that said Vaughn hit him the hardest he ever got hit. He was a beast that is for sure.

No apologies needed. I didn't take it that way...just assumed we were missing the non-verbal cues typically absent in internet forums! You missed my wink...I missed your nod...but no worries! I think you're right about Roger Craig and VJ. I've only heard Randy Cross(?) tell the story, but he says that Roger Craig said it. Those 4 guys in the Dome Patrol each had a role to play, and VJ was the enforcer..."run it over here and I'll knock you into next week." Such good memories...
