As the Saints open the preseason Friday night against the Minnesota Vikings, fans will be watching a number of battles at a number of positions.
Quarterback is certainly not a position battle, but the question is, will Saints’ fans first look at Drew Brees come on Aug. 9 … or Sept. 9?
A look at Brees’ historical preseason numbers as a Saint suggest a trend toward the latter. His playing time in August has decreased, perhaps with good reason. Why expose your franchise player in an exhibition and instead prepare him for the regular season in a controlled environment – like practice?
In Brees and Sean Payton’s first year in New Orleans in 2006, Brees attempted 62 passes in the preseason. His preseason pass attempt total hovered between 40 and 51 between 2007-2012, and it’s effectively declined ever since. ...
