How the Saints Can Overcome the Odds of Another Bad Start

by Alex Garcia

The New Orleans Saints return home to the comfortable confines of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome this Monday Night after suffering yet another last-minute heart-breaking loss to the New York Giants last Sunday — a loss that gave them an 0-2 start “out of the gate” for a 3rd consecutive season.

Although the season is still very young, many fans are beginning to worry about their future because of a rather harsh statistic that essentially says that teams that begin the NFL season at 0-2 teams virtually have no shot whatsoever (only a 12% chance) of making the playoffs.

However, Saints fans should be cautioned that not all hope is lost; and that there are many ways the Saints beat the odds and become one of those squads that comprise that 12 percent statistic.

Last year when the undefeated Falcons came to the dome on Thursday night I had 100% confidence that we would win. This year, even though we look better as a team, I don't feel nearly as confident.

The Falcons are sick of getting embarrassed by the Saints on Primetime. I just have this eerily feeling that they're going to want the win a little more than we do.

I hope I'm wrong and we smash em.

I hope my boys don't let me down. But if there was ever a game I'd bet the Saints, it'd be this one.

Saints secondary is weak. Matt Ryan looking fo Air it out big time.

I don't think so. The Falcons played a ball-control game with the Raiders and it worked well - they ran the ball 29 times (against 34 pass) for 139 yards, and it limited Derek Carr's opportunities.

I think they will have the same approach with the Saints to try to limit Brees. Sure, they have personnel to pivot to try to air it out but I don't think that's their Plan A. For us, it just means that we will need to be effective on offense. If we can move the ball and get points on each or most possessions in the first half, I think it force them to try to match us.

PK and Miller said on MTC yesterday that they expect the Falcons to play coverage, mainly in nickel packages, 3-3-5 etc. and they referred to the Giants success. But I don't think the Falcons have talent in their front 7 to play as effectively. We could finally see some real production from Ingram if Drew is checking to runs and dump passes regularly against 3-man rushes.

At this point, just win.
Then start stacking and collecting wins.

At the end of the season, see where you are.

That's what the thought was going into last year's home tilt with the Failclowns. They were looking for offense -- and the wrong one showed up :9:

The turning point might well be with the darn refs. They've affected us about as bad as the injuries have.

This is the type of game where Ellerbe actually plays and is all over the field for us. He will be making plays in the run game and in coverage. The D will look stronger Monday night with him out there and the Saints will win.

If Ellerbe plays, we win

That's a complex and unique strategy. I wonder if we'll try that route.
That's a bold strategy cotton!

Seriously though, they need to just focus on winning one game. Something we haven't managed to do since 2013 is get a win streak going. If we can manage that would be huge for this team.

Remember, we got blown out by the Eagles a few days prior to our first game against Atlanta last year, and we still managed to clobber the Falcons. Payton always has this team ready to play against Atlanta. The same can't be said for Quinn, who's only had one division win so far as the Falcons' head coach. Injuries or not, I like our chances.

That was Mike Smith's strategy every time we beat them.
