The New Orleans Saints claimed veteran tight end John Phillips from the Denver Broncos and waived cornerback Brian Dixon and linebacker Chris McCain, according to the NFL transaction wire posted Monday.
Phillips caught five passes for 40 yards and one touchdown and played on special teams in eight games with the Broncos. He spent parts of three seasons each with the Dallas Cowboys and San Diego Chargers before he joined the Broncos in the offseason.
The addition of Phillips gives the Saints a third active tight end with Josh Hill and Coby Fleener. The Saints commonly run plays with three tight ends on the field, with offensive linemen Tim Lelito and Senio Kelemete blocking as an eligible receiver on those plays.
