In a year when time’s passage has been warped, where indoor living has stripped seasons of their usual meaning, imagining the concept of football in December might feel either too far off or completely unrealistic -- but for the sake of the metaphor, follow J.C. Tretter on this one.

To visually demonstrate the risk of playing a contact sport while also dealing with an invisible virus, the NFL Players Association president and Cleveland Browns center asked whoever was listening on a conference call a few weeks ago to conjure an image of a winter game in a cold-weather site, the offensive and defensive lineman squared up with their facemasks inches apart, the misty clouds of breath escaping their mouths as they wait for the snap.

Understanding how the virus is transmitted, it’s not hard to see where he was going.

“My job’s gotten more dangerous,” Tretter said. ...
