Sean Payton didn’t want to hear a question about the defense struggling on third downs. In fact, it didn't seem like he wanted to hear any negative questions about the defense.
The group played good enough for the Saints to win, and he wanted to make his feelings on the issue very clear. Sunday's 25-23 loss to the Denver Broncos had nothing to do with defense not getting off the field.
“You mean stay on the field offensively,” Payton shot back at a reporter.
There were some issues on third downs. The players acknowledge it. In a game that ended on a blocked extra point being returned for the deciding points, there’s bound to be a hard analysis of anything and everything that put Saints on the wrong side of a razor-thin margin.
And in a pursuit of perfection, the issues on that down are fair to bring up. New Orleans allowed 11 of 19 third downs to be converted, which helped Denver hold a nearly 20-minute edge in time of possession, among other things.
