Article Saints Depth Chart Preview: Full 53-Man Roster Projection Before Camp (1 Viewer)

The really fun thing about these predictions is the surprise at the end. My favorite one was Josh Hill, a real head scratcher at the time who proved to be a valuable contributor for several years. We heard almost nothing about him during training camp. I believe he’s now a scout for the Saints.

Training camp is less than a month away, and we’ve released our full 53-man Saints roster projection heading into it.

I break down every position group — including the QB battle between Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler, a suddenly loaded RB room (now with Cam Akers), and how the defense might shake out with new DC Brandon Staley.

There’s talent across the board, but also some tough decisions on the horizon. Enjoy!!

this looks right as of this day but....I could see a veteran QB and Haener would be out AND a veteran WR and Petis could be out.

I agree for the most part I would take Clyde Edwards Heliare over Akers and Donovan Peoples Jones over Cedric Wilson
Agreed! A few weeks ago, I posted about the Bub Means/DPJ duo. In terms of measurables: height, weight, speed, even down to arm length n hand size, they are nearly IDENTICAL!

What stands out for me is their size. Both are about 6’2 n 215 lbs, with 33 in arms n 10 in hands. So for a team lacking in that “big bodied” WR, if they use can their size to their advantage as receivers n esp as run blockers, that’s good enough for me! 😊

IMO, the biggest difference between the 2 is that DPJ, who just turned 26, has more NFL experience. He’s da more “polished” of the two. He runs solid routes, knows how to hand fight a CB, can high point those 50/50 passes, and does a really nice job at maintaining possession n gettin both feet down on da sideline.

So if all goes well n we go into da season with CO, Sheed, Cooks, Means, DPJ n Petis at WR, I do think we’ll be fine!

But we’ll see!

That's fair enough, I just don't see Haener ever doing anything good for us, even as a backup, so why persist?
Yeah, I don’t know. I’d say Shough and Rattler are on the roster, and keep somebody for the practice squad. I’m not all that worried about who #3 is.

Haener has literally started in the NFL, scored a TD in the league, etc.

Dekkers played at Iowa Western Community College last year.

Let's not disrespect Haener just because he's now more of a "known quantity" than a shiny new toy with untapped potential.

If we need an emergency third QB next year, and if we need a guy in the QB room to help elevate his peers, it's Haener.

Dekkers is going to be a Practice Squad guy and maybe next year he'll be capable of playing himself onto the roster if he continues to develop.

By my count, it's not a full 53 man roster... you have 23 players on offense and 25 on defense. I would add Velus Jones Jr as kick returner, and would replace Wilson with Peoples Jones. I think Ugo Amadi is a lock to spell Taylor in the nickel. There would still be one spot up for grabs...

Not 2017-2020 explosive.
I think he still can be. The key thing that is different from 2017-2020 was the fact we had a legit back in front of him that did the "dirty work." Our running back room was thin because of COVID and then afterward, health wasn't a thing anymore..lol. If we can maintain (keep healthy) a good complimentary back, I think we can see AK like he used to be.
