Jeff Irleand joined the Saints in 2015. He has been heavily involved in 7 drafts.

Round 1 picks

2021- Payton Turner DL
2020- Cesar Ruiz- OL
2019- Eric McCoy - OL
2018- Marcus Davenport- DL
2017- Lattimore CB and Ramcyzk OL
2016- Sheldon Rankins - DL
2015- Andrus Peat - OL

Notice a trend.

8 players selected, 7 in the trenches.

And yesterday's game was won.....by dominating the trenches.

Keep up the great work.

All these years later and the philosophy of picking lineman early has paid off for the Saints. I remember listening to Jim Finks way back in the day talk about how important that was in building a team into a winner, and it still matters just the same.

There is two reason for that:

The first and most obvious is we don't really get to pick that high we weren't even in the top 10 in draft those years, not saying we should be or want to be. lol

The second the game of football starts in the trenches on the O and D line really outside the QB those are the most important positions. But they are usually boring picks so they don't get much flash as a WR or RB would.

I'll be the first to say that those are the reason we are even competing right now you can have the best QB in the league or best RB and without protection or holes opening up it does not matter, same can be said for the D-line you can be going up against a rookie QB and make him look like an MVP candidate with a porous line...Oh wait that has happened a few times in the past with the Saints.

But but but skill positions!!!

Big guys deserve way more credit for their effort in this sport! Just compare their snap count and how much they suffer throughout a whole season.

Im really proud of our linemen

Yep, you know who else has this philosophy? Andy Reid....

Yep. Teams that are built inside-out usually win over the long run. All the great QB's, RB's, RB's WR's, DB's and LB's couldn't help their teams as much without a solid base.

We're quite fortunate he's still here. Same can be said for Dennis Allen, whose first head coaching gig was with the wrong organization before he came back to the Saints. I think he'll have better luck for his next one.

Some of these guys might be happy where they are.

They make great money, they are in a super professional organization, hopefully they are each the type of guy that wants to be a great assistant coach and not deal with head coaching headaches.

Hopefully the same for Ryan Neilsen.

I want to talk about that 2020 undrafted class. We always do well with UDFAs but I think last year with the abbreviated scouting process, the teams with better scouting departments had a huge advantage.

Callaway - Currently our #1 WR had two great TD catches in the last preseason game
Johnson - Had two great TD catches yesterday
Jones Jr - Replaced Murray and averagd 4.5 ypc yesterday
Throckmorton - Did a great job filling in at RG yesterday
Roach - Played 54% of the DT snaps yesterday
