Drafting skill positions in the 1st round went out the window when they revamped the rookie contracts. The team that correctly selects 4-5 starters in every 5 year cycle are destined to win. The way you find 4-5 starters out of 5 picks is to target positions with high chances of success such as lineman with impressive physical builds in college who are prepared to play.

5 starters playing on contracts that average 2-3 million per year equates to a minimum of 35 million a year in extra cap space.

Not just the trenches either that is a noticeable trend also drafting unpolished players that are super athletic as they know that we have the coaching staff to make them fulfil their potential

I want to talk about that 2020 undrafted class. We always do well with UDFAs but I think last year with the abbreviated scouting process, the teams with better scouting departments had a huge advantage.

Callaway - Currently our #1 WR had two great TD catches in the last preseason game
Johnson - Had two great TD catches yesterday
Jones Jr - Replaced Murray and averagd 4.5 ypc yesterday
Throckmorton - Did a great job filling in at RG yesterday
Roach - Played 54% of the DT snaps yesterday
We might look back on our undrafted class of 2020 as being better than most teams drafted classes

This is proof of how important it is that all of our linemen stay healthy.
We can win without All Pro players at the skilled positions as long as we keep controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. :melike:

Jeff Irleand joined the Saints in 2015. He has been heavily involved in 7 drafts.

Round 1 picks

2021- Payton Turner DL
2020- Cesar Ruiz- OL
2019- Eric McCoy - OL
2018- Marcus Davenport- DL
2017- Lattimore CB and Ramcyzk OL
2016- Sheldon Rankins - DL
2015- Andrus Peat - OL

Notice a trend.

8 players selected, 7 in the trenches.

And yesterday's game was won.....by dominating the trenches.

Keep up the great work.
I know it nick-picking, but McCoy was 2nd round (1st player taken by Saints).

They’re also good at find late rounders that contribute.
‘16 4th DT Onyemata
‘17 7th OL Clapp

2019 wasn't bad either. We got Deonte Harris, Lil Humphrey and Shy Tuttle.

And our All Pro WR was out injured.

Unbelievable.
For sure, it is about the trenches esp in the playoffs trying to get a championship.

Looking forward tho, he may have to draft a WR this draft coming to go w/ MT, Callaway and Deonte Harris.

He’s a Bill Parcells protege.
