The phrase "must-win games" is thrown around so loosely within sports. Often times it's a fallback story line to present when there isn't a better one in the sports media hopper.
I try to avoid the term "must-win" as late into a season as possible. For instance, it would have been silly, to me, to coin the New Orleans Saints' Week 4 game at San Diego a must-win. Yes, the Saints had opened the season 0-3. Losing another game would have been improbable to rebound from for a Saints team struggling for answers.
We're hitting December now. This is must-win territory for teams still hovering around .500. Lose games this time of the year, and you're left likely sitting on the couch after New Year's Day.
Where do the Saints stack up heading against the rest of the teams in the hunt? They don't have the worst odds, but the forecast is pretty grim as the Saints host one of the teams with a better outlook in the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
