I really thought he’d wait until next year to sign an extension because if he truly becomes the starter next year, he should get more than I would expect him to get right now. Maybe they’re doing this with the promise of a of a pay bump if he becomes the starting QB. I’m very interested in hearing the terms of this deal.
Taysom's contract is 'affordable' enough that if Payton falls in love with someone else at QB, he's not making too much money that we can't bring someone else in.
It would mean Taysom would be a very expensive backup next year...but Taysom is unlike anything we ever seen. He does so much that he deserves the $ IMO
I think this is the best for everyone. He hasn't had a big payday yet, so this gives him a guaranteed $16 million peace of mind (a nest egg for his new family) in case he gets hurt playing swiss army knife. We get to see him for a year at starting QB for quite a reasonable starting QB price, and if we go a different direction we're not on the hook for big money long term. He also gets a year at starting QB to prove his worth and drive up the price of that follow up contract. If it all plays out well, he'll get at least 1 big proper contract in the 20+ million/yr range. It's a win/win on so many levels.
That's a pretty steep extension for what Hill does now. Seems to indicate Drew has indeed told Saints this is his last year. If not, why guarantee $16 million for someone who may be a backup for 2 seasons?
It’s a good deal for Taysom. It’s not the best move for us. The best move for us would’ve been to make him play for the 1 year 4.6 mil tender and reevaluate next year. If we still want to give him a 1 year 16 mil deal next year, do it.
I disagree. Next year he is UFA so he would not have the incentive to sign for that same amount.
Do you think teams will be lining up to sign a 31 year old quarterback who has never started an NFL game and has thrown...less than 20 NFL passes for more than 16 million a year?
as do the eldersBYU Alumni foundation probably already has him in the phone.
Not a chance another team offers him $16 million a year. If Drew gets hurt for a long stretch this year, my bet is Winston takes over, so Hill would not get a chance to show his QB skills.it depends. If he saw extensive playing time under center this year then I think that is possible yes. The Saints have said he is a starting QB, they intend to do this experiment and they have insured their ability to do it. If he is indeed a starter for us in 2021 then this deal is a bargain.
as do the elders
