The Saints must figure out how to avoid falling into a trap this week.
Thanks to a scheduling quirk, New Orleans is preparing to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the second time in three games. On the one hand, seeing the same team again is an advantage in that the Saints already know everything about their opponent. But the danger is trusting that familiarity too much.
“I think there are some benefits to both clubs,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “Clearly being a division game you look at the cut-ups again, but then you look at the changes. They will look at the Arizona game, we’ll look at the Dallas game. And I say this: It’s going to be hard to believe, but when you start putting your plan together and you look at the cut-ups, you feel like the Tampa game that we played was four weeks ago.”
It might feel long ago to some, but the game is still fresh in a lot of minds — especially for the Saints. The team turned in what might have been its most feeble offensive performance of the season two weeks ago in Tampa Bay. Drew Brees threw three interceptions during a game in which the offense generated 294 yards, and New Orleans ultimately fell 16-11.
