Not to sound completely stupid, but what, exactly, is a torrent?

I'm not exactly sure how it works, but it is is a way to upload very large files to share and others can download it. I think there has to be what's called a seed, and better if there are several. It seems the more seeds, the faster the download time. The key being those who have already downloaded need to keep their connection when the download is done to allow others after to download as well. There are some folks here who could explain it better than this, but that's what I understand of it.
