The Saints Front Office at this point IMHO are doing exactly what they should be doing!! They need to shore up the D-Line, and Get Linebackers in here that can make plays and not get pushed around!! I think the Saints made the right call in NOT making a huge play on Asante Samuel due in large part to the fact the HE, (1 Cornerback) would NOT be the answer!! Samuel would get burned here too without any help up front!! His production went down severely when the Patriots D stopped getting the push it once did...(See Superbowl, and Eli having all day)..Samuel knew he needed to get the Fat contract NOW BC he KNEW that the patriots were getting OLD, and this was his shot!! He outsmarted the Iggles!! They will find out they overpaid, I mean why else would he take the first offer on the table...:dunno: The Saints FO knows that to get better, they will need another D-lineman to help put pressure on the QB...They know that in order to be strong up front they need LBers to fill the gaps, and if they can do that they will be ok at the DB position!! I am not saying you dont bring in some new DB's, but even David would look better if the Saints had Briggs, Vilma, and they could make a play for a possible trade UP to get one of the two big men in the draft!! Make NO mistake about it, if they got a Dorsey, or Ellis, added Briggs, and Vilma, the draft is DEEP with good corners and safeties this year...Go after maybe a Cason who is SEVERELY underrated, and will fall...IMHO he is one of the best Cover Corners in the Draft!! Then Try and pick up maybe some value picks late, possibly a potential 2nd rounder that falls to the 5th like Highsmith!! Trust me, he could learn from a GREAT core of LBers in Briggs and Vilma, and could fill in Nicely if they needed him!! Maybe go after another corner or safety, and possibly pick up a RB, and Receiver, or TE and this team is Stacked!! Trust me on this!!

I do agree that it may have been the right call by not breaking the bank to go after Samuel. However, no offense, but the Saints FO hasn't really done anything yet. Your argument about loading up the front 7 is great, but it is full of if statements. If Ellis or Dorsey, if Briggs...

I think Free Agency is full of Ifs!!! But I can only hope that a scenario happens like this, I am aware that it is PURELY speculation...BUT, if the Saints are a player for Briggs as stated, then a HUGE piece of that puzzle is realized...Then you would have to think that packaging a deal for either Dorsey or Ellis would be something REALLY worth thinking about!! CB should be the least of the saints worries of the BIG 3 that they need in D-line, LB, and CB!! With the Draft being deep at the CB position, and the saints having MM, and David, the saints could really BUILD in the draft at the CB position...I am only saying that it looks as if the Saints FO is really going after the RIGHT players FIRST!! Established Starters through FA...Not Throwing money away at the first BIG Name CB on the market!! But thanks for the input, I completely understand that at this point its speculation!!

They made a trade....

I like the trade, but so far...we've just made a trade. I'll reserve praise for a few days.

I like the fact that we addressed a major need, and with a guy who will be solid, if not pro-bowl, for the foreseeable future. And yes, I know his knee has to heal and I know he's under contract for only one more year, but this is encouraging.

Now--corners, DT, and a TE, but it's good to have this one checked off.

We need Corners. I would much rather take (Elis, Dorsey, Rivers) at the 10th pick than try to reach for a CB at the 10th pick. With the addition of Vilma we could go after a FA DT and then it might put us in position to trade down lower in the draft and still get a top 5 DB and extra picks. I'm all for bringing in Ty Law as well, I know he has only a few years left but even in 2 years from now he will be better than what we have now.

I don't know. The FO made a lot of noise about how agressive they were going to be in addressing the defense in FA. Even were able to get the "experts" to buy into that, most of them were predicting us to be major players.

We made a really nice TRADE, signed a couple of our own and NOTHING. I am glad Vilma is here and have high hopes for him, but to be honest....I'm disappointed. I expected more.

At this point, I don't see enough change to expect anything from the defense other than the same we saw last year.

Is this for real? You can't possibly be serious. I have no idea whether in the end the defense will be better or worse, but for crying out loud, the free agent market has been open for one day! What did you think was going to happen in the space of 24 hours?

Which superstar free agents have you seen get away because the FO lied about its intent to be aggressive? Asante Samuel? He was likely never intending to come here in the first place.

Meanwhile, look at the list of visits the Saints have lined up. They are trying to woo players to come here. We don't get to make guys sign if they choose not to. For the sake of those of us who don't enjoy wallowing in depression, could you possibly hold off on the end-of-the-world scenarios at least until next Friday?

The fact is that no one on this board has any idea what's going on in the front office, but I've seen a lot of assumptions. We don't know about any phone calls, any talks between Loomis and the agents, or anything like that. You're never going to hear Loomis say, "Well, we made an offer to Assante Samuel, but he decided to just use that offer as leverage for a bigger paycheck from the Eagles and he never had any intention to come here." It's not happening.

Concur! Other than the trade, keeping the right kicker is the only move that directly impacts the winning margin. While some of our internal signings keep players on the roster, most are for depth and flexibility -- good, but not great. We wasted our own internal FA time and did not extend the contracts of Smith or Colston. This team needs to take the next step and sign a guy like Briggs. 8-8, 7-9, etc is not good enough. Yes it is early, but I too will reserve my praise as it is EARNED by the the FO.

I will say that they are, but also that over the past few years they have been trying to do the same thing. They have entertained free agents that would have dramatically improved our defense over the past few years. Those guys choose to go elsewhere, and it probably and little to do with the FO and their negotiating skills and people skills and more to do with the history of the franchise and state of the City. These things take time, and there are only so many players available. The FO has done what they can do. When all the top guys get signed, we still have to make a smart effort to improve, and that is why I can't criticize moves like Simmons, even in retrospect. At least they are aware of the needs and making concerting efforts to fill them without mortgaging our future.

I have to agree with most here. The Saints have made a trade, granted most (as I) love the trade, however it is what it is.

We have heard about scheduled visits from two rush specialist DE's, three nickle corners and a backup QB. We have heard possible rumors of interest in some DT's that have been traded already and one that is rumored to be still on the block. We have also heard rumors about interest in trading for a starting TE. Still these are all rumors. Vilma is the only player that has exchanged hands (and don't get me wrong I love the Vilma trade). We re-signed some key players (Young to me was key as is Goodwin now seeing Faine go to Tampa).

All and all I am not disapointed. I would love to see a deal come soon with David Patten and either Billy Miller or Eric Johnson. I also would like to see Stecker brought back but I think he finds a better deal with more playing time somewhere else. At this point we have spent some money bringing back players we needed, we finally have a quality starting MLBer this team hasn't had in many years, but we still need some cornerback help (and niether Randall Gay or Reeves really constitutes that), we still need some youth in the middle of the line and we could always use another good linebacker. Like I said, I am not disapointed, we just have not done anything as far as free agency goes yet. Lets wait a couple days to reflect before we give praise or critism.

I'm not saying we should be building statues of Mickey Loomis in Jackson Square, nor do I necessarily disagree with your conclusion that we wait a couple of days to give praise or criticism. But when people say that bringing in Gay or Reeves as potential FA acquisitions at CB is no help because they aren't good enough, that's just being depressing to no useful purpose. If that's your position, and that's fine, then who are the candidates you think the team should be looking at?

I would think the fact they are trying to find quality CBs in the FA market is the best sign because it means they recognize and are attempting to address the problem.

What is most frustrating about coming here this time of year to get news is the number of people (and this doesn't really include you rlemieux, even though I quoted your post for my response) who insist on taking the approach that everything that happens with the Saints is wrong. Of course, you're welcome to think that if you want, and even post it; I just wish those who feel the need to take the glass-half-empty approach would at least suggest the alternatives they wish the team were taking.

Substantive discussion of the pros and cons of different players or the value of different positions is entertaining and useful...merely complaining that everything the FO does is too little and cheap is just downright depressing.
