THE NEW ORLEANS Saints attempted to upgrade their defense a year ago, coming off a 10-6 season that saw them fall one game shy of getting in the Super Bowl.
Names like Jason David, Kevin Kaesviharn, Brian Simmons and Dhani Jones were brought in with the hope that they could give the Saints the boost they would need to get over the hump and into the Super Bowl.
It didn't work.
David was an enormous bust, Simmons failed to beat out incumbent starter at middle linebacker Mark Simoneau, Jones was cut before the season began and Kaesviharn provided little more than depth in the secondary.
