The top duties of most NFL fullbacks are to be a lead blocker and contribute as a core member of special teams units.
The New Orleans Saints have asked a lot more of John Kuhn this season.
Kuhn's five touchdowns -- four rushing and one receiving -- show how much value he's added, but coaches have found a variety of ways for him to help the offense beyond just blocking for tailbacks and converting short-yard situations.
On a handful of plays each game, Kuhn will line up as the lone back in shotgun sets and provide pass protection for quarterback Drew Brees, something the Saints had done occasionally in the past but do more now with Kuhn in the role.
"(He has the) ability to know where the free rusher is coming from and to be able to go over and pick that up," Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. said. "I think that he's smart, and he knows what we are doing. I would say that as a fullback, he's taken more of a role in that than maybe some other guys have in the past."
