I don't think ignoring special teams was the issue. It was injuries.
Losing several players to injury or ineffectiveness changed the plan. Once middle linebacker became a mess, guys like Craig Robertson were forced into bigger roles on defense, and thus had to give up snaps on special teams. Nate Stupar's role changed. Losing Josh Hill was a big blow.
But even as that was happening the team continued looking for players who could contribute on special teams. It seemed like the bottom of the roster was constantly being churned, in search for more contributors.
Still, this phase has to get better. People like to overlook special teams, but it's critically important, and that should be plainly obvious after last season.
